Hey guys, sorry so late on the report. Forgot how to post... I know it's been a while since i've been in the fishing scene. Since the last time anybody's heard from me - alot has changed. As some of you may or may not know, i used to commute from Torrance to Irvine everyday to go to work. A couple months ago, i hit a pedestrian and killed him. Fortunately, it wasn't my fault - witnesses said the guy ran in front of my car as he was trying to catch a bus. I guess it goes without saying, it took a toll on me mentally for a while. I decided to pick all my stuff up and move to Irvine so now i live across the street from my office. For those of you that know Mina and my daughters, they're doing well - i go and see the kids on the weekends - or they come over to my new house.
Anyways, this is the first trip i've been on since the accident and it was everything freakin' great that i remember about fishing. I wanted to jump on the Eclipse on their last trip out of Seaforth before they made their move up to Davey's Locker for the fall/winter schedule.
So after work on Friday, I drive down to SD (which is only about an hour drive from Irvine) without hitting any pedestrians. Sign in - Board the boat around 8:30. I made a promise to myself, whether this trip is a complete skunk or if i catch limits - i'm just going to enjoy my time out on the water.
The main deckhand (Tory) brought us in the galley and gave the speech and the fishing rundown. He said we were gonna put on the blinders and head straight out about 80-100 miles until we found the kelp patties that were loaded with YT's. He mentioned that the fish weren't exactly trophy sized but... what do i care? I haven't fished in 10 months. The average fish that they were catching were about 6-8 pounds. Okay - so bedtime.
Put the IPOD an and went to bed - woke up the next morning around 6:30 and had breakfast. Around 7:30 we put out the trollers. I stood by the bait tank with my hook in hand waiting for that jigstrike. Nothing. 8AM it was my turn on the troll - i stood there at the rail and waited for a half hour. Nothing happened.
Okay - remember the promise. remember the promise. remember the promise - you're lucky to be out here on the water and not stuck behind the desk in front of the computer... when - ZZZZZZZZZzzzzZZZZzzzzZzzZz!!!! HOOK UP.
i jumped for my setup and threw in my Sardine as 2 guys brought in 2 twenty-something pound YFT's. Unfortunately, nobody landed any after the troll but it was SO nostalgic to see Tuna's flopping around on the deck and kicking around the big metal bin. That telltale "clang clang clang clang clang" vibrating noise of fish muscle hitting metal.
Then around 9am - we spotted the patties. I hooked and landed a small YT (7 pounds) on my first drop. Actually, i hooked and landed 1 Yellowtail on every single patty we stopped at. My count by 2pm was 6 YT's. Biggest one being around 12 pounds. It was AWESOME! I actually breached the limit.
After 2pm, the trollers went off again where we hooked up with some Skip jacks.
Once i hit the limit, i brought out my heavy gear 30# and 3/0 hooks and started pinning greenback mac's for a shot at some bigger forktails. I'd get a lot of bites but the grade of fish was just too small. Still, it was fun.
My count at the end of the day was 8 Yt's. The boat didn't reach the limit that day... i think it was like 92 YT for 22 passengers - 2 YFT's and a hand full of skip jacks.
Eclipse's operation was great. In fact, i've already rsvp'd my next trip with them in 2 weekends from now (11/13 fishing Cortez/Tanner 1.5 day). Cap knows where the fish are. Crew (Tory and Victor) knows how to control the deck (oh and filet without butchering) and the chef William makes food that EVEN I can eat without getting sick.
til next time - KK
