I believe that's a Cicada. Supposedly those things make an epic visit every 17 years and come in the billions, then they die in 3 weeks and lay their eggs in the ground for it to happen again. The strange thing here is why is there one alive on your wall?

I think Dark Shadow has it correct en Espanol! We called them "Children of the Earth" when we were kids. If you turn it over it looks like a baby (thus the Jerusalem cricket name in reference to baby Jesus). Was always told they are poisonous, but probably just urban legend! Throw it on a hook, but it could bring bad luck if you kill it. Wait, that's probably urban legend too!

They are fantastic bait! What you do is get five or six of them and toss them into the water. Then you run around to the opposite shoreline and catch the fish as they try and get away from the ugly thing. Prolly harmless, although I did almost break a leg trying to get away from one once. :Shocked:

And according to my grandmother, if you kill one, you have to ritualistically burn the squished remnants, or else you will be attacked by a swarm of them as you sleep, when they smell that you've killed on of their own.

Kinda weird that it was on your wall, this is a subterranean species and spends 99.9% of its life underground-- preying on other underground critters.

i thought it was a potato bug but you guys beat me to it. man i wouldn’t even go near that thing it is to damn big. bugs shouldn’t be that big and if they are that big then they deserve to live cuz i sure as heck aren’t going to F with that thing. F that, thats like the people who get hurt doing dangerous things then wonder why they got hurt. Or the dumb blond girl who walks towards the bloody death screams in a horror movie. Messing with that thing is asking for trouble.
