but what are the defining characteristics of an Alper trout.

All the ones I've caught had a more "football" like shape than a 'bow, and a browner color.

Check that out. Basically it's just a big rainbow and they are not just darker they are the same colors as the rest of the trout population for the most part just bigger then your normal size stockers or average holdover. If the fish aren't caught right away they begin to change colors depending on what lake they are put in. They are well fed and will be full bodied.

(Ive heard that they are bred with steal-head but that's what Ive heard, don't know about that for sure though.
