Headed out Saturday for the first time in over two months (not cool) to hit Newport Harbor for bit in my kayak. Started the morning off with these lures tied on.:
½ ounce football head,
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh21/Badgerbacker89/Oct%209%20and%2010/a033.jpg
Also a rod rigged with a ¾ ounce spinnerbait and a rod rigged with 6 pound mono and a 3/8 ounce T-rig for assorted plastics.
The photos are courtesy of a disposable waterproof camera. I ruined a cell phone when I dumped a kayak this year, and then left the replacement on the roof of my car a few days later. So I tried this option to save the trips to BestBuy. At first I thought they were worthless for posting (but fine for my record keeping) but the more I look them, the more I like them. Most of the photos only tell half the story, maybe the where but not the what. Sort of like the blurring people do with their photos.
I launched at the 15th street dock around 6 am. Tide was coming off 1.3’ low at 4 am, towards a 6.4’ high at 10:15 Sunrise was at 6:50.
Managed on 10” type on a 3/8 ounce T-Rig by around 6:45. But things really picked up over the next hour or so.
Picked up this 13” fish on my jig at 7:00

Shortly after landing a 10" model on the T-Rig at 7:14, I decided to move off again. I worked the spinnerbait when at 7:45---this 16+” fish.

I decided to cover some new water so I headed out right after catching that nice Spot; not like me to leave fish. I guess I was anxious after not being out in awhile. Kept moving along, casting the spinnerbait at interesting looking docks.
Chunky 13ish fish. Hit the first cast at the shoreline corner of a dock at 8:10.

Moved over and worked the spinnerbait through some Eel grass beds.
Sand Bass like spinnerbaits too… One hour before high tide.

I lost a nice halibut boatside on the very next cast. Long, fun fight though.
I worked around the PCH bridge right after the tide changed. Couple missed bites on the spinnerbait and the jig but no fish. Normally I pick up a few Sand Bass in there, but only little guys.
I did get this one at 10:50 on the jig and noted nearly zero water movement.

Headed back in and picked up one more 10” on the spinnerbait around noon.

I was awarded clearance and headed out again on Sunday.
Launched at around 7:45, up in the bay more… Pretty stuck to my spinnerbait, even more than the day before. I might have used the jig more if I had tied on a ¾ ounce (or even heavier) instead of the ½ ounce from working the docks more on Saturday.
First fish hit the same spinnerbait around 8:00. Just under 14”

Not long after that Spot, the big fish of the weekend. Right at 17 inches.

Worked all over and around the PCH bridge past Linda Isle. Landed a small one at one of my favorite docks, but not much until this guy hit my spinnerbait at 10:25.

It took some nifty boat work to get this fish. It was hanging off a current eddy formed by a dock and piling. I paddled up, flipped the spinnerbait in and then drifted back into the eddy. The fish was actually off the dock quite a bit, where the current lessened.
Headed into the cove inside Linda Isle. Not even a bite on the spinnerbait or the T-Rig. I did pick up a couple more 13 to 14 inch Spots off of familiar docks on the way back one on the T-Rig, one on the jig.
Last fish at around 1:30 right before landing.

The spinnerbait still looks great, not a single chip and the glitter is still in place. At one point, I casted it into a concrete wall on four consecutive casts. Not to mention slow rolling through rocks, bouncing off a couple docks, and even performing a little trapeze act in a shoreline tree.
