As always I was looking forward to fishing on Saturday…I got conformation from a friend that he was bringing some people on the boat, along with the usual suspects, so I was looking forward to a great day out on the water. We left King Harbor with 17 anglers headed out to whatever the day would bring. I wasn’t quite sure what we were going to do…maybe fish rockfish and sculpin and then come in and fish bass…but today, we would parallel the coast as we would be heading north for some structure sand bass fishing. Yay!!!

We anchored up at the first spot and were greeted by a whole lot of sculpin…most of them were short, but we did manage to get a few nice ones. The best bet for a bass at this spot was setting your squid on the other side of the rock. However, the bass were few and far between compared to the bountiful sculpin, so we moved on to find something else. The next spot held pretty much the same thing, except for a nice big calico bass caught by one of our friends and regular anglers, Kevin. He decided to tank it and release it after the jackpot weigh-in.

We then proceed to try something a little different and fish a hard bottom spot, but it was pretty desolate except for a few perch bites, so we resorted back to the structure. The next spot was a good spot for bass with quality grumpies coming over the rail. Again, we were catching a whole lot of sculpin – on every drop, if you didn’t get a bass, you got a short or barely legal sculpin, but we did get quite a few nicer ones. This spot also petered out after a while, and we moved on.

This spot was almost identical to the last spot – quality grumpies and plenty of sculpin were coming over the rail. The best bet was a 1-1/2 or two ounce leadhead with a green mogambo grub and a whole, fresh dead squid. There was no denying when you got a bass bite, as this day the water was about 64 degrees and the fish were a little more on the aggressive side, and not really “sitting” on the bait like they do in the winter.

With time running out, Steven turned the boat towards Redondo, and we headed home. It was a pretty nice day out on the water fishing the structure. We ended up with just fewer than 50 bass, about 40 sculpin, and a few miscellaneous species. Kevin won jackpot with that big calico, which looked to be somewhere in the neighborhood of four to five pounds. This was his second jackpot in a row, which is pretty good considering he hasn’t been fishing for very long, but he is learning and is well on his way to becoming a great angler. Others on the boat did very well also, and personally, I ended up with a half limit of bass and some sculpin. Great times, great fishing!

Hi jackpot jimmy,

WTG on the nice catches. Appreciate the reports as I'm spending all my time and effort in tricking out my little boat.

May go out next week just to see if the ocean still looks like it did in August !!

Hey Jimmy,
Nice fish you got there. I headed out on the Pursuit for Haks B-day. I was hoping you were gonna go, but obviously not.
It was a slow grind but everyone made out ok.
Thanks for the report and pics,
Robert
