Kinda late report, but it took a while for me to get the photos from my friend. I have a headache right now so sorry if my report is kinda dull

Me and a friend decided to do a 3 day, 2 night camping/fishing/sightseeing trip up in the Bishop area. 2 other friends were supposed to join us, but they flaked. Whatever. We got a bit of a late start and were on the road on Friday at about 9am. It was my first time camping and fishing in Bishop. I went a few years ago to check out the ancient bristlecone pine forest, but this is the first time I've fished.

The weather report was pretty spotty, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I brought rain gear just in case. Since it was my first time up there I didn't know that the weather report for Bishop is totally different than the report once you get up in elevation. For most of the trip it was overcast, then some light rain, then sunny, then repeat all day long. Towards the end of the trip it was overcast and rainy.

The fall colors were beautiful out there. I did some post production on some of the photos mainly because we were using a little point and shoot and the lighting was tricky.

Here's some pics of our drive out there...

We got to Intake 2 campground just in time. There were 2 spots available. We got 1 and the other spot got taken pretty quickly. I wanted to camp at the Sabrina Campground, but it had already closed for the year. Sabrina Lake was still open and that's where I was really looking forward to fishing.

After we set up camp we went back into town and got a few supplies, then went over to Bishop Creek to fish a bit. When we got there we saw a guy leaving. We said hi and started chatting and he pulled out a 4-5 lb. rainbow he had just caught. Really nice fish. Anyone know if it's an alper?

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010411.jpg

We fished for a little bit and each landed a little rainbow. I was using either a gold kastmaster or a green and orange panther martin. Can't remember. She was using worms. Oh and the guy that got the 4 lber was using worms.

The setup I'm using in the pic was devirginized with that trout. I used it the entire trip and really liked it. Phenix Iron Feather 7'8" with a Stradic 1000Ci4.

Headed back up to camp planning to get the grill going, but it started raining so we ate pre-cooked food and called it a night. That was the same for almost the whole trip. Right when we're about to get the grill going or a campfire started it would start raining.

Next morning we were ready to fish Lake Sabrina. We got a kinda late start, but this was a much needed vacation for me so I decided to take it easy. The drive up there was beautiful...

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010449.jpg

We got to the lake and scoped it out a bit. There was a trail that went around the lake, so we decided to hike a ways to get away from other shore fisherman.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010474.jpg

Continued our hike...

We settled on a rocky spot with a point. When we woke up in the morning it was cold so I put on my base layer and long sleeve fleece, forgetting to bring anything else. So all day it would get sunny, then overcast, then sunny, so i was alternating between my fleece and bare skin all day long. Won't do that again.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010493.jpg

I got my friend baited up with a worm and I tied on a small silver kastmaster. We both cast out at the same time and about 15 seconds later we were on a double hookup. First cast of the day, double hookup! Awesome.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010502.jpg

I didn't take too many pics cause they were all about the same size... 12-14" rainbows. Whenever 1 spot would get slow you just had to move down about 30 feet and they'd be biting. My friend isn't used to fishing rocky areas so she got lots of snags. It was frustrating for her and that sucked. I tried to give her some lures but they just kept getting lost too. We kept about 6 trout to take back with us. We released a bunch of em.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010504.jpg

Later that day we checked out a hot spring we had heard of. There were a couple naked old guys, but we found a nice unoccupied pool and relaxed for a while.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010505.jpg

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010512.jpg

We went back to camp hoping to cook up some trout, but it started raining again. We decided to go back into town and get some hot dinner. Later that night it stopped raining so we started a campfire. We had heard about North Lake so we decided to try it out the next morning. The drive up there was awesome with the fall colors...

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d52/gavin310/Bishop%20Oct%201st%20to%203rd/P1010569.jpg

We fished the lake for a while with one bite but no takers. It was pretty slow all around. I probably couldn've landed a few baiting and waiting, but I just didn't feel like it. I can do that all day at the local LA lakes.

We decided to pack up our camp site and then just check out some fishing spots along the 395. We found one spot next to the fish hatchery that had some huge trout but they weren't interested in anything. One of the DFG guys at the hatchery told us there was good fishing at this one campground out a ways. Forgot the name of it. My friend's friend wanted some trout, so we figured we'd go try and bring some back for her. The fishing there was excellent. It was actually a little too easy for my liking. We easily got about 8 trout and released a few others.

We hit the road and called the trip. There were some awesome clouds on the way home...

Hey Gavin nice report and great picks especially the ones where the trees are changing colors to an almost pink! We are headed up again to Bridgeport with our normal convoy of misfits (probably 4-6 heads). It will be the last weekend for 4 days if you want to roll. We usually get 2-5 man cabins and it's pretty cheap for all involved and we have a blast fishing and talking chit! My boys are headed up again this Thursday til Sunday (phuckin zzholes:Envious:).

I was up there too (Bridgeport) from the 30th til the 6th and it was pretty much the same scenario with the weather for us. We got rained and snowed on almost the whole time. The weather report said possible chance of showers on Tuesday a day before the trip then bam the next day the report changed to 5 days of 70% chance of precipitation! That's the Sierra's right!

Glad you had a good time,

Later

Daniel

Thanks for the report and pics. Seeing those pictures of your trip makes me want to make a trip out there. My short term goal will definately be setting up a camping/fishing trip to the sierras for next year.

That sounds awesome. I'll check out some things and see if I can make it. Thanks for the invite.

I know exactly what you mean with the weather report... the first one was the report right before we left for Bishop... the second one was the report when we got there. LOL. I swear weather reporters have the easiest job in the world.

That report on the left was basically the same as the one I had a day before except it didn't call for rain on Friday or Saturday and then the report I got the day we were leaving was exactly the same as the one on the right. Crucial...
