Which Way Out
10-10-2010, 01:24 AM
Busted out of Goleta on the Thursday the 7th for a solo run.
Ran up the hill to So. Lake per the guys at Mac's in Bishop recommendation. Took a rental boat out and was not hooking up anywhere. Hit the inlets, hit the edges, hit everything. So I returned the boat about 2 pm and then realized the lake was stocked about noon and the launch ramp was overflowing with trout. So I did what everyone else was doing, the catch and release game. Kept 4 for a future dinner
Sat. morning I stopped back at Mac's and inquired about the water between So. Lake and Parchers. I saw someone fly fishing there and wanted to give it a try. Mac's set me up and I took off up the hill. Got the waders on and within 10 minutes had the first of many. The first rainbow was in the 2 pound range and all the others were just good size stockers. Fished with a 5 wt 9 foot rod with sinking line. Used two flys, one a green stone fly and a copper bead headed pheasant tail dropper.
Best day of my short fly fishing experience. It was so much fun.
I highly recommend it to anyone to give it a try.
Sorry no pic's my camera and water don't like each other.

Sounds like you had a great time... try bringing your fly gear to the surf.
