Jackpot Jimmy

With reports of excellent bass fishing in the mud during the week, I was eager for Saturday to arrive and have a shot at rounding out a nice day on the bass. Then, counts seemed to drop on Thursday, and even more so on Friday, but I was still looking forward to fishing as I always am after a week of school.
On Saturday I was joined by my friends who fish weekly, as well as some folks from the California Korean Fishing Club. We loaded shortly before six o’clock, and I started to go around collecting sack tags for Morgon and hung them, as usual, in numerical order. We then proceeded to roll off the dock with 20 anglers, all ready and eager to fish.
First order of business was to try for the mud bass that were on the chew mid week above MDR. Morgon told me that one of our weekday regulars slayed the bass on a white leadhead with squid on eight pound test, so I rigged up with that to start out. Once we got up to the area, we started a drift and almost immediately started hooking fish. We dropped the hook and sat for a while, having a slow but steady pick. The bass would come in waves…we would hook three or four and then it would peter out. After a while it petered out to nothing, so we pulled the hook and looked around for more bass. We had one more drift where we caught a couple, but nothing substantial. So, we moved on to try something different.

As you can tell, these were all quality bass, averaging around three pounds with some bigger than that. Anyways, we moved on to try some structure spots. We tried some spots, but the bass weren’t too eager to bite. Some guys did get some sheephead and other stuff, but only a couple bass were caught.

After that, we proceeded to go sculpin fishing. Sculpin fishing also had been excellent during the week. Anyways, we fished the sculpin for a while, eventually filling our quota. Not every one was legal, but there were some jumbos caught…so it was a nice mix of fish. Afterwards, we decided to hit some more structure for the bass.
We finished the day getting a couple more nice bass. My friend Bill had a huge bass up to the surface, and when he tried to bounce it, the leadhead pulled, and it swam back down to the depths. It was the big fish that still, in fact, is. Anyways, a nice day of fishing…it was also a hot one out there…hot and flat calm with very little wind. With this warm weather, I can’t help but wonder if surface fishing will turn on…I guess we’ll see in the coming week. Great times, great fishing!
