Mike (Bones) and I decided to hit up the local Calico spot this morning to see if the Checkers were still on the chew. I sent out my usual roll call to the S.W.A.T. Crew. Mikey (Exfactor) called and proclaimed with confidence, "Hey, I'm coming down to join you guys and show you something you've never seen before..." Mikey says that he's going to bring his Calico stick and throw surface irons from the surf to nail the Calicos. I was thinking to myself... throwing surface irons in the surf...? All he's gonna nail is a boiler rock and lose his jig. http://www.horrordvds.com/vb3forum/images/smilies/eek6.gif Well, I always try to have an open mind and being a fan of thinking "outside" the box... I wished Mikey luck and watched him with great... let's just say, curiosity... LOL As we were gearing up in the grey light I watched Mike tie on a 6" surface iron and just shook my head. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/a11.gif Then we hit the surf and went to work.

We ran into another Mike (Midgettosser1) a fellow FNN member at the spot and he joined us for the morning session. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/14.gif Mike, it was a pleasure to meet and fish with you buddy... good luck with the kayak mission tomorrow. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/03.gif

Conditions: Calm, clear and warm weather, flat to moderate surf conditions, water quality good, moderate to excessive salad, no baitfish, water temp. 64 degrees.

Location: The Malibu vicinity.

Mission duration: 5 hours approx.

Techniques:
Exfactor - Throwing surface irons and hard baits.
Bones - Throwing hard baits and drop shotting plastics.
Midgettosser1 - Throwing hard baits
Wingnut - Throwing hard baits

Overall, the fishing was quite slow today... especially for ME. http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/a02.gif I must have made over 500 casts for one small Calico Bass. Maybe because of the recent full-moon cycle, but nobody got skunked and the usual good times was had by all. http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/10001/smile.gif

The highlight of the day was definitely when Exfactor showed us up by nailing a nice Calico with a surface iron. He said that he was gonna do it, and backed it up. Simply awesome Mikey, you taught us something new today, U da Man! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rulez/t2009.gif

Mike (Bones) also did exceptionally well in the surf today with three Flatties total (two shorts and one nice legal). :Envious:

What a fun day, it's always a privilege to fish with my S.W.A.T. buddies and to meet a new friend.
Mike, Mike and Mike... great fishing with you guys!

Take care and I hope that everybody had a successful weekend of fishing. http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/userpics/10001/smile.gif

Mike's 3rd Halibut of the day.
Here's the scoop on this fish... After we were all done fishing, had a nice group lunch and said our goodbyes... Mike calls me on my drive home and says "Hey, I'm going to stop and fish this other spot on my way home for a little bit, wanna come...? I was already on the freeway heading home and said no... http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/rtfm/t2405.gif

It was still a good day in the surf for all even though it was slow. Although it looks like I did very well it was a super tough bite. I made my first cast at 6am and my last at 5pm. Three fish in 11 hours is far from WFO for sure.I just had a feeling about that last spot.
I have put in three days of el skunko to set up a decent stroke of luck today and to be honest....I'm worn out
Mike aka Midgettosser1.......Good fishing with you today ...Good luck on your Kayak redemption mission tomorrow. Mikey aka Exfactor.....Glad you made the long drive down from beautiful SB. Good luck on chasin those Albies you are all pumped up about!
Arthur........Always a pleasure my friend. Thanks once again for your overwhelming generousity.
HEY.......MY LC measuring method has that fish at 6 1/2 LC's.........an LC is 4.5 inches......are my cataracts acting up again?

Congrats to Mikey for showing the youngsters some new tricks with that Iron!

Not every trip can be as fruitful as the fish can talk! They have definitely posted lookouts and spotted the "SWAT Members" trying to sneak down on them again in the light of the Full Moon!!

The infiltrator Mike looks fully equipped for the SWAT missions!

Bones! Nice instinct on returning to the spot! Hope you recover nicely tonight as the weekend is still young!

Another nice rally of the troops there Commander!

Look forward to my day of freedom to be able to join the assault again!

Great report bro. It's always enjoyable reading your report even when you skunk or catch only one :D hehe.
I hit the beach this morning as well. Made my first cast around 6 and landed a 19" shortie at about 6:30. A couple of guys who fished right next to me caught one minutes later. I asked them how big is it (just being courteous because that fish is even smaller than the one I caught) and after whispering and measuring and whispering, they told me it's 22" and dumped the fish in a big black trash bag. I said wow .. there's noway in hell that fish is a legal. Maybe they can read my mind after seeing my face they left after that.

I was in Malibu today (Sunday) and it was very tough fishing. It was a BBQ/beach day with friends though so we were at the dog beach which isn't a great surf fishing beach. The waves break too close to shore so I could only wade out like 10 feet at the most and even then I was constantly running from waves. Hooked a larger sized perch but he came off and that was it for the day. Lots of salad too. Something slowed the fish waaaay down this weekend. Maybe what I really needed was a surface iron... LOL.

That is awesome, and I now have a legitimate excuse to pick up a surface iron stick! Congrats exfactor, that is definitely one of the sickest things I've seen. I've got a few other ideas about what the surface iron could snag from the surf in a few other areas too, so I think I'll be emulating you exfactor.

Arthur, glad you busted the skunk and looks like a great day on the sand. Thanks for the words of wisdom as well, and look forward to our next surf fishing trip.

Mike, very nice legal! The halibut sense seems to be a common trait amongst the higher up SWAT members, and glad the extra effort you put in paid off. Hope to hit the sand with ya sometime soon man.

All the best guys,

Sorry to hear the bite was tough but it looks like you guys made the most of it and still managed to pull a couple nice fish. I have been throwing jigs since my childhood (30+ years) and needless to say I am huge fan of the surface iron. I know heavy jigs have accounted for some fish in the surf but this is the first confirmed catch that I have seen come out of the surf on the surface iron and a nice fish to boot. Well done Mikey. I wish I could of joined you guys out there I will take a tough day of fishing anytime over staying at home to clean out the garage anyday.. "Yes Honey be right there."

Wow .. lost 2 LCs in a day? .. I feel sorry for you bro :)
That's why I usually bring 2 sticks with me. I use my Ugly Stik for dropshotting with 8# Fluorocarbon, and the other stick which I use from throwing hardbaits like the LCs is loaded with 15# Stren mono. My LCs got stuck in the rocks/mussels at least 6-7 times every session but with the 15# line I was able to get them back. I don't know if using such a big line will effect the fishing but I value the LCs, not for monetary value but because they are like souvenirs from a great friend I never met who taught me lots of things about surf fishing and provided me with lots of the stuffs to get started. You know who you are :) thanks bro

Trust me it wasn't easy losing em it's a very sinking feeln I like em even tho I haven't caughtbanything yet try to set up spots I'll go n a few days and replace them whatever you do do not use 20#spectra I can't wait to go back and talk to mr baitshop know it all thanks bros c ya out there

bsp
09-27-2010, 07:00 PM
Go with 12lb mono or 50lb spectra keepemlo. Flatties aren't line shy when they smack an LC. Just keep your drag set looser with Spectra to compensate for the lack of stretch.

exfactor
09-27-2010, 10:16 PM
25# maxima, a stiff long rod, and accurate casts are required for doing the iron thang. If you get a backlash, reel over it, and when your jig is back on the beach, cast it paralell to the beach, and straighten it up there. If it sinks out, your likely to lose it. I fished a single hook Tady A1 light. The hook rides up all the time. I didn't lose any gear that day.

The surf was pretty calm for most of the morning, just an occassional rough swells here and there. Pretty ideal conditions, but the fish wasn't cooperating.
I usually fish with #12 or #14 line, so if my LC gets hung up, I usually put steady, increasingly heavy pressure until the lure comes loose or the hook bend enough to release it. This workd "most" of the time. Make sure that you tie a good knot.

Fortunately, I don't have many "Honey do days..." anymore, but I still have to deal with a mean "Boss". Swells picking up for this weekend so the S.W.A.T. kayak assault will have to be postponed.
But the next flat conditions weekend that comes up and the mission is a go!
BTW - Thanks for the pics of the El Nino of years past... awesome!

Wow .. lost 2 LCs in a day?
Using heavier live when throwing the LC's is a good idea. Halibut aren't particularly line shy and it doesn't really matter when you're throwing reaction baits anyway.

Go with 12lb mono or 50lb spectra keepemlo. Flatties aren't line shy when they smack an LC. Just keep your drag set looser with Spectra to compensate for the lack of stretch.
Right on Marc! :Thumbs Up:

25# maxima, a stiff long rod, and accurate casts are required for doing the iron thang. If you get a backlash, reel over it, and when your jig is back on the beach, cast it paralell to the beach, and straighten it up there. If it sinks out, your likely to lose it. I fished a single hook Tady A1 light. The hook rides up all the time. I didn't lose any gear that day.
Great tip Mikey, I still can't believe that you didn't hang that iron up all day. You were a Man on a Mission that day.

Now there's something you don't see everyday, tossing surface irons in the surf.
Very well done Exfactor, that's old school fishing right there.
Way to go swat crew.
Goes to prove that if you throw something with confidence... doesn't matter what it is, most of the time, you will succeed.

More slayage......saweeeet !

another home run....

congrats : )

Let's not start with that LC daisy chain thing again unless you post the pic of the actual daisy chain....

I for one want to see it again : )

LMAO !

Nice catches..

Congrats !
Gary
I wish we hit home runs more often but we'll take whatever pitch Poseidon throws at us.
We may not be able to hit it out of the park most of the time... but I'll take a bunt single over a strile out any day. :Envious:

I know....I know....What SWAT officer would be caught dead w/o a measuring tape?
Shame on me!

Midgettosser1 provided Gary with his wish

Thanks Mike!

Be careful Mike, or all the tape measuring "Experts" will come out of the woodwork and call you out on that daisy-chain. Seriously, that might be closer to a 28-29" fish.

hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!. Want 2 c u pull that out of the backpack smiley smiley smiley
I used to have one in my pack Mikey... seriously. LOL

Now that's thinking outside the box Mr. Exfactor, I thought those surface irons are strictly for fishing off a boat. Very cool. Still some nice catches for a slow day.
Thinking "Outside the Box" has its rewards...

Wingnut Pug says "How big is my Halibut...? Bigger than the one Wingnut caught today!"

ROFLMAO!!! Good Girl!
I think Brennan's Halibut was bigger than the one YOU caught Donna.

remember that time up at casitas when the anchor line
broke, the line was sitting about five feet down and he
went face first...exfactor likes the water!!!
looked like a good nice day out there.....
