hit LBC yesterday afternoon after chruch planning to target the Opaleyes. Launched at 200pm it was slightly choppy, swells 1-2, water was greenish brown. Fishing incoming tide. water temp in the low 60's. arrived at the first location and only picked up 3 perchs, hit the second spot steady pick 5 or so, the last location we hit the last 4. called it quits around 630pm, seas were calm in the evening. o yea, 1 legal sandbass.lost something big as well. maybe a huge sheephead or something. all in all, slow day picking for the perchs. arrived at the docks and was greeted by DFG. She stated those were the biggest opaleye she ever seen. the average size were 12 inches+. The bigesst weighed in a little over 4 pounds and 18 inches. tight lines. LOBSTER SEASON IS COMING UP ON 10/02/2010.

it's not really insane we catch those on the norm. I probably seen few bigger than the one I caught. but there is motherloads of huge ones in LBC. angelrs in so. cal does not fish for opaleye. in Korea and Japan these are #1 eating and fhsing. we use 20 feet rods, 3 feet leader and a bobbers with moss. catch them all day.

Hi GGA,

Nice fishys !! Although caught on structure everywhere, love watching the Japanese TV programs when they've got the Opaleye 'in your photo' (Kuromejina) fishing on the outcroppings where we have to ride a shuttle boat to get to spot. Bonus is the Ishigakidai and the like too !! You'd think the anglers had Samurai swords and battling when they have hooked a fish !! Kinda funny to watch !!

Thanks,

JapanRon

Yeah I've seen some of those videos online and the techniques for the fish. Japanese anglers really go all out for that fish. Long rods, refined reels, high end line, the works. 4lbr is the norm for you? Good grief. I would go for the little fish more if I could get out to the salt more often.

I didn't think these were good eating fish. I never fished for them, but I always see them near the rocks in the marinas and jetties. The dark color with the white dot reminds me of an oversized aquarium damsel.

I think the fish is a part of the damselfsh family.

Those are huge! My biggest was a little over 1lb, about 12 inches. Usually just see the 4-8 inch ones off the jetty
