View Full Version : Catch & Release (ALL BASS- Largemouth aka LMB / Wiper)

VinePatrol

ALL BASS are Catch and Release ONLY. LMB and Wipers.

Irvine Lake Catch and Release rules are readily displayed/viewable at the tackleshop, fishing cleaning stations, private boat launch and rental boat launch areas for you all to read/view.

We can check your livewells/ice-chests etc to see your limits/catches at anytime. Please abide by Irvine Lake fish limit rules (on your fishing stickers/passes worn), and release ALL BASS (Largemouth & Wipers) caught so they may be caught again by other fellow fisherman...the bigger, the funner to catch!

Wipers like this don't get this big by fisherman illegally keeping...

WIPER INFO
http://www.arkansasstripers.com/images/id-hybrid-bass.jpg

Wipers are a hybrid created by crossing striped bass with white bass, and as a result they have features of both. Wipers have a series of small dots that form horizontal stripes running lengthwise down the side that are intermediate between the well-defined stripes of striped bass and the dim stripes of white bass. The wiper’s stripes are more broken than those of the striped bass and when young, the stripes are faded, and juvenile wiper are easily confused with white bass.

Like striped bass, wipers have a parallel row of teeth on the tongue, while the white bass has a single, egg-shaped mass on the tongue.

LARGEMOUTH BASS (LMB aka Widemouth)

http://www.fishingtackle-lures.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Largemouth-Bass.jpg

http://irvinelake.net/images/ap/bass038.jpg

The largemouth is an olive green fish, marked by a series of dark, sometimes black, blotches forming a jagged horizontal stripe along each flank. The upper jaw (maxilla) of a largemouth bass extends beyond the rear margin of the orbit. In comparison to age a female bass is larger than a male. The largemouth is the largest of the black basses, reaching a maximum recorded overall length of 29.5 in/75 cm and a maximum recorded weight of 25 pounds 1 ounce (11.4 kg).The fish lives 16 years on average.

I don't get why its catch and release but yet we have to pay 22$ for entrance fee..and then 10$ for launch.

In short Irvine Lake's Largemouth Bass (LMB/Bucketmouths) are a gamefish that are NOT STOCKED, like some of our other fish. Thus resulting LMB's Catch and Release ONLY policy (Both Species - LMB and Wipers) .

Keeping these fish will thin the population ending in NO MORE BIG ONES, or worse.. No BASS, and less fishing/catching. If you catch or see someone catching, please release or ask them to release. Otherwise we'd be happy to help C&R them for you

You can always call the tackleshop for anything that concerns the Lake (including fishermen keeping LMB or Wipers unknowlingly). We will happily let fishermen know the rules and regulations on Irvine's Catch & Release polices... 714-649 9111 xt 1

What happens if I hook a bass and it dies? Do I dump it in the lake dead?

Largemouth Bass when caught using lures/bait rarely ever die (unless kept in livewells for a long time- And there's no need to do that here at the Vine). If a Bass/Wiper are "gutt hooked" cut the line and release it, the hooks will rust out in a period of time.

Let me take a shot at this one. What is the LMB population at Irvine lake? I heard an estimate one time and couldn't believe it, Vine patrol what's your estimate? If you don't know just say so. Secondly what strain of bass are in Irvine? If you don't know say so. We'll wait for the answers and then continue the discussion.

VinePatrol

Without shocking the water (accurate counts of species/fish) its nearly impossible to estimate the Largemouth Bass population at Irvine. But, with spawn seasons passed, the changing size/depth of lake, shad/fry and amount of anglers successfully fishing Bass at the lake, its clear to say that Irvine has a solid population that "keeps on growing". For the seasoned Bass fishermen with assorted amounts of Bass tackle, there is no limit of catch and releases here. Most especially when the bite is on. This year alone good to excellent days and reports of 10-30+ LMB catch & releases have been shared/confirmed in the tackleshop and on the water. There are 2 strains of Largemouth Bass, Northern and Florida- we have the Florida. Vineassist/Jimmy can confirm

================================================

This C&R picture/post was started to show/share the lake rules and memorable LMB catches for anglers and visitors.

For further info please contact us directly at the tackleshop 714 649 9111 ext 1 - A good portion of our staff are dedicated Bass Fishermen and have fished it regularly since little kids- Like the new generation of kids that are starting to fish it now. Also, there are seasoned fishermen/professional guides (Bass, Trout, Catfish, Crappie, Bluegill or other) working at the lake/tackleshop daily that can readilly answer or assist you to the latest fishing at the lake.

There are techniqually three species of Largemouth Bass in Irvine Lake currently. There are the Northern Stain Largemouth, Pure Florida Strain Largemouth Bass, and a Hybrid of the two. Over the years you will get more Hybrids of Florida/Northern Strains due to the gene pool being mixed during spawning. Also we have a very healthy population of Bass on top of other fish in the lake. There really is no need to due a shock survey at this point. There is plenty of baitfish (shad/silversides/fry/sculpin and others) in the lake as well. Irvine Lake is probably one of the most underrated Bass fisherys in the state! Trust me I have fished a lot of the big ones in the state and their is a reason I choose to stay close to home and fish here when I get a chance.

And to answer the person who asked about stocking Largemouth Bass.

Our fish spawn in the lake so they naturally reproduce and replenish there are own population. Stocking Largemouth Bass is very expensive, we stocked Bass about 10 yrs ago and even back then it was astronomical. If a deal did come along where we could buy some F1 Florida Largemouth Bass for a steal we would defintley look into it.

The "F-1" largemouth are "pure" Florida-strain fish; in general, these are the fish that get to the absolute biggest size [incl. WR fish], especially when they have lots of trout to eat. Once the "pure" strain becomes mixed with Northern strain, or even mixed with "F-2's" [50/50 Fla/northern], they still get nice and big, but you don't see the giants over 19 pounds. There is no doubt in my mind that there is an 18-pounder [or 3] lurking in Irvine, but the [relatively] few anglers throwing the big swimbaits, and only moderate number of good sight-fishing opportunities during the spawn means that a lot of luck will be involved in catching it.

Just a question out of curiosity... since some of the photos look to have multiple fish and/or are taken at the dock, does the lake permit the fish to be held in a livewell for a photo and then released? In other words, do they allow these fish to be handled like a bass tourney if someone has a good livewell and releases them later? Or is that not considered appropriate? Of course, the best for the fish is right back in the water, especially if caught deep, so they can get back down with minimal handling. I think a lot of the LMB's do OK, but doubt the wipers would tolerate that sort of handling.
Also, anyone else catching more baby stripers (or wipers???) lately?
