The plan was to sneak out Saturday morning on a solo trip to the waves. Work has been pretty hectic and I just wanted some time to get out and re-collect my thoughts and RELAX! Well, anyone that has kids knows that the best laid plans change to something else quite often. Kinda like when you close the bathroom door and everyone needs to talk to you RIGHT then! After seeking advice and surf conditions from my personal guru (wingnut) on Friday, I started gathering my gear for the next morning. Brennan sees me getting things together and gives me the big, blue, puppy dog eyes. My solo trip is now a Mother/Son trip. That's cool....gives us alone time together. He then reminds me he's having a sleep over with his friend Jake Saturday night and asks if Jake can come to. Kaity is eaves dropping and says she now wants to come as the official photographer. OK.....so now we have a whole field trip!
Bright and early Saturday we all load into the car and head to the beach. Decided to try just north of county line on the Ventura side since that is usually a little less crowded. First a few scenery pics from our "official" photographer.

Made our way down to the beach, noticed how rocky it was, but decided to give it a try for a little bit. Brennan's friend Jake had never been fishing before. It was fun getting him set up and teaching him some basics.

Before long he was getting the hang of things and he and Brennan were off and running

I finally was able to get my time in the waves but the first rock that slammed into me and I was ready to move. (I know...sissy girl) Not to mention I look over and my little scouts have taken up alternate water activities since we weren't getting any bites.

Quick call to Wingnut and I was able to coerce his secret spot out of him, although, I had to swear on my life I wouldn't tell anyone where the magical place was. We pull up and get to work.

I hear Jake yell "I caught something". I look over and crack up. Skunk off! NO COMMENTS ON MY PHOTOSHOP ABILITIES....ARTHUR MADE ME PROMISE!!!

Jake casts out again a couple more times and I hear him say "Donna, I think I'm stuck on something again" At this point I'm watching his pole and I can see it bouncing but I don't say anything and tell him to just reel it in. He reels in close enough and realizes he's caught his first fish ever, a small perch, and all on his own. He is so excited he's jumping up and down and yelling. I quickly grab the little guy so he doesn't get a concussion and we snap a couple of pics before letting him go. Seeing the excitement on his face made the whole hectic morning worth while. After we release the fish he promptly asks if he can go with us every weekend! Ha!

Mom was next to get a nibble. Nothing big but nice to at least bring something in.

Now that he's a seasoned veteran, the Conejo Kid is not going to be shown up so he switches from the LC he's been throwing all morning to his perch set up. Not 10 minutes later he's on his first fish of the day.

I told the boys we needed to start packing up and head home. Brennan tells me "Wait....I want to cast out again. I'm going to get another one, I can feel it" Boy, you have been hanging around Wingnut too much. Well as it turns out that's not a bad thing AND Brennan was right. The next cast he feels something on his line. Tells us he thinks it's a bigger one because it's harder to bring in. He gets it close to shore and says "I don't think that's a perch Mom"
"No, it's not Brennan it's a yellow fin croaker. Good job!!" He starts high fiving everyone. He's had the biggest smile on his face and said he's adding it to his species book.

I didn't get my quiet day on the beach but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Quality time with my kids and introducing someone to something we love so much. Next time Miss Kaity will be getting her little princess toes wet and catching along side us!
