Keilani's 2nd Tuna Trip for 2010 - Get 'er DONE !

Hit the open Blue with Webmaster Jeff Saturday……

On the ride out….bout 2:30-3 am….

as Jeff was snoozin’ in his confy ride…..I looked off into the black void…

Off way in the distance I saw lights…

lots o’ lights….

so much that the WHOLE SKY ILLUMINATED !

It seemed like what you see on the shoreline….

You know when your off in the distance and the shoreline city lights light up the whole sky !....


BUT….it wuz ALL from other boats !


Turned out that the whole pacific tuna fleets were on the prowl…

As we arrived at ground zero…..the flocks wer all about huntin’…..

Boat after boat after boat after boat !


100 plus easy…more like 200 PLUS !

We trolled….

We baited….

We chunked….

1 strike on a dine but “Hit and SPIT !”

We watched the flocks rolling in and out…..

Tooo much traffic….

Too much noise…

Fish were there…we saw ‘em on the meter but they would not strike !


Finally about 11:45am…



Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz !

BENDO !

I lay into my 1st ever Albacore Tuna on the troll….

Ohhhhhhh Yeah……

Blooooood !


Soooo Sweet….

We watch as 1/3 or more of the fleets are turning tail and giving up !


NOT US….

No WAY !

We came for Blooooood!

Yeah Buddy…..

Jeff is ON !

He works the fish like a trooper……

It get’s to the boats edge after a nice lengthy battle…

I have gaff ready in hand….

But the fish is hott ! and his head is thrashin’ at a weird angle….

I opt to hold b4 I pull the trigger on layin’ the gaf to ‘em..


He saw that gaff comin too and decided to expend that energy reserve he still had !

Zzzzzzz !

Zzzzzz !…..

and MORE Zzzzzzzzzz!

Down past deep color and out about 10-15 yards….

I told ya’ that suck was STILL HOTT !

Finally….

Back to the boat’s edge..

And I feel good about driving ‘em

and the gaff’s steel sinks

The blood flows as the deck turns red and the fish hits deck !

We baited a bit more….

One more troll strike but it was a short strike knockdown….


No hookup !


No more action after that so after a good while we trolled off headin home….

Jeff got a little hungry…as I drove Keilani…I looked back to see he had already devoured all the meat……

Seems as though the fish were around but the unbdridled boat and angler pressure seemed to prohibit them from getting into any kind of bite pattern…

We were fortunate to be able to coherse the few we got into biting !

Very thankful for our action…we arrived back at the docks and we spoke to the Fish and Game…..they told us of the 200 plus boats coming in that they polled and said it was like a 90% skunk rate for the day….


Whew….glad we pulled something through : )

Keilani made it happen again for us…..

and I’m sure we had a little helping hand from Dana as well up in those sweet fishing grounds in the sky : )…

Great day…..some hard work….but sweet times…

I’ll always remember my 1st Alacore trip and my 1st Albacore : )

Also Baked some Sunday with fresh minced Garlic, old bay seasoning and lemon and pepper seasoning…..that came out the bomb as well…

ALSO experimented with a “CEDAR PLANK”

BAD ARSE !

Cooked some tuna on a cedar plank, soaked the CEDAR PLANK for 3 hours in water and then cooked them on the plank on the BBQ…

Damn…we went into a feeding frenzy, I should have taken some photos of the eats on sun….it even looked phenomenal !

Anyways….I’ll bet your all ready for lunch now ! Hungry yet ?

Nice report. I was out on an overnight boat, we left 9/10 and fished 9/11. Like you we metered lots of fish and got them to boil up, but very few takers. There was 24 of us and we got 10 BFT on bait and 3 Albacore (2 troll, 1 bait).

There was also a Make-a-Wish tournament that week so that is why there were unusual amounts of private boats and skiffs out there.

I was lucky enough to get one BFT going around 24 lbs. I even bumped it down to 15lbs, but they still did not want to bite. Other than limiting out on Albacore on a 1.5 day trip it has been a tough season.

The Make a Wish tournament added to the boat count Sat., we waited until Sunday, no difference, and weather was worse, 6am whitecaps, 15+ knot winds and washing machine 3-4 foot seas by noon. Still a bunch of boats, more skunks including us. Congrats on landing some good ones.
