View Full Version : S.W.A.T. “Black Ops” Surf Mission. Multiple Personal Bests. Sunday 9/12/10

Wingnut
09-12-2010, 09:29 PM
Fresh and reliable intel came down from Central Surf Command that conditions was looking great for Sunday morning. Got the green light last night from our Surf Assault Coordinator to strike while conditions are prime. Loaded up the S.W.A.T. assault vehicle and went over last minute battle plans with my First Lieutenant Bones.

The plan was to launch a surgical strike at grey light, unleash fury on the enemy’s position and extract within a few hours before they knew what hit them. This was to be a two-man mission for Wingnut & Bones, as our other S.W.A.T. brothers are on their own covert ops or busy with honey-do-day.

Conditions: Incoming tide (rapid ascent), Very little wind, 1-2 foot swells, excellent water clarity, moderate salad, water temp 64 degrees, very little baitfish presence.

Techniques: Throwing hard baits.

Total Fish Count / 3-hour mission.
(6) Calico Bass – released
(1) Cabazon – released
(1) Barred Surf Perch – released
(4) Short Halibut – released
(1) Legal 25” Halibut - KIA

I hit the surf for three-straight days (Friday, Saturday & Sunday). The three-day mission have been both brutal and glorious… looking forward to going back to work tomorrow to get some R&R.

Been a great weekend with both of my Trojans and Redskins winning! :Dancing Banana:

Have a pleasant week everybody.

Arthur (Wingnut)

This is too funny… After catching the legal Flattie, Mike buried the fish in the sand and marked it so he could come back later to get it on our hike out. I guess a Seagull (enemy spy plane) was watching him, waited for us to leave the area, dug it up and pecked out the eye balls. See the bird tracks in the sand… hilarious! :Big Smile:

Very solid trip Arthur, and big congrats on your two PBs! Hopefully I'll have some luck when if I pull a poacher move on the area next week...

Mike, congrats on sticking and bringing home a solid flatfish! Your freezer must be pretty full now! How are you healing up by the way?

To both of you guys, I did all my work Friday afternoon so I could enjoy myself Friday and Saturday with the first USC tailgate. Kept both of your guys' advice in mind too by the way. Everything's pretty quiet now, but it definitely was a mad house around here with embarrassing videos, trash cans getting tossed out of windows, and groups of random people staggering/passing out/singing in the hallways. Had an insanely good time, but fortunately didn't make a fool of myself and I don't plan to. Some of my classmates definitely learned a few lessons this weekend. In any case, looking forward to hitting the surf with you two sometime soon!

Commander Wingnut & Lieutenant Bones,

What a great way to cap off another tremendous weekend "Infiltrating the Enemy"! :Big Smile:

Looks like "Wingnut Pug's" intelligence has been feeding some great info as to the "Enemy Locations" :Thumbs Up:

Unfortunately I had to keep my priorities straight this weekend with "Family Matters" and "Friends, Fun & Fishing" will be there for another day!

With all of Arthur's Text Messages, Voice Mails, and PM's with the pics from the last 3 days it was a still an easy decision to keep my priorities straight! But I knew something special was going to happen! :Big Grin:

Quality "Flattie and Checker" there "Bones" PB for the year?

Well done guys! I knew if the enemy was present you guys would capture them. Well Arthur that big calico helps make-up for the one you lost yesterday.Funny how we were just talking about about catching a big a calico from the surf. It didn't take very long for you get on another big one I suspect there will be more to come in the weeks/ (hopefully months) ahead. Bones came through with a nice halibut.. You guys had a great morning. It looks as though the enemy never saw the beach attack coming until it was too late. Air support definitely doing undercover steak out on Bones. Although air support are our allies often helping to pin point the enemy locations they just can not be trusted around prisoners... >LOL..

Also want to thank Phuong for making the caps... I Hope to fish with you soon my friend. Maybe we can all hit the kayaks. If I pull all my resources I think I can piece together a big enough fleet to get whole team out there.

Talent...? LOL, more like dumb luck I would say...

Gavin, here's the scoop on the battle with the General. It wasn't pretty and I was very lucky to be able to land it.

We were working a set of boilers and I get absolutely hammered... I made a mistake of not having my drag set tightly enough while fishing around the kelp and boilers. As expected, the Calico headed straight for the boiler with thick kelp strands wrapped around it. I couldn't adjust the drag fast enough to be able to turn him. I had #12 Daiwa Steez fluorocarbon line on my Pluton which is very strong, but nowhere close to a kelp cutter rig. After trying unsuccessfully to muscle the fish out of the thick kelp for about a minute, Mike reminded me on how to correctly maneuver the fish from the kelp. He said to freespool the reel and give the fish line to work its way out. I did so and within a couple of minutes the fish freed itself. I had two solid hooks in the fish's mouth and the bent hooks were from the fish brushing up against the structure and probably from me trying to wrestle it from the kelp.
Thanks Lieutenant Bones for the refreshed course in kelp fishing 101. :Thumbs Up: Live & learn, I won't make the same mistake next time.

JerryG
Pretty funny how things work out huh Jerry? When I farmed that big fish the day before, it really bothered me. Not because I lost a fish, it happens... but the fact that we didn't see what it was. It didn't want to come up and just made big circles until it popped off. Pretty sure that it was a Calico, but you never know until you see it. Most people don't want to see the one that got away, but I do! Gives me more motivation the next time around. Poseidon giveth and he taketh away... that's how it goes. An armada of S.W.A.T. kayakers... I like that. Looking forward to fishing with you soon my friend.

NG, Wingnut Pug's intel are always flawless... But the information is expensive, I owe her another trip to the butcher soon.

This is awesome. I got inspired and tried fishing off the rocks in PV Saturday. The only thing I caught was an egg to the back. 4 kids attending a company picnic, decided to use the remaining eggs used for the egg toss on me. Tossing eggs at me from the top of the cliff. They got egg on me and some of my gear. They wouldn't leave me alone. I called the police, grabbed my gear and headed up to bust some heads. Took me around 30 min to hike back up the hill, by then they were gone. Looks like you guys had fun, would love to join you.

Damn, really sorry to hear about your ordeal. But I'm glad that they were only eggs and not rocks and you weren't injured.
Keep getting back out there and trying, you will have success in no time at all.
