I thought this was going to be the weekend I could finally get out and catch a Tuna, after two months of bad weather, and few fish to target. I was all set to get out with Tony Sr. and Tony Jr. for fishing on Saturday. It was 9 pm Friday night and things did not look good. I called Senior and advised him that the weather outlook was terrible for both Saturday and Sunday, however, there might be a window open for Monday, the Holiday? We agreed to delay the trip until Monday.

Watched some great college football games on Saturday, did some honey do’s on Sunday. Went to Church and an afternoon Barbecue with friends and family. Took another look at the weather forecast for Monday at 6pm, not too bad, according to several weather sites. Talked to Junior and it was game on, we set a time to meet in San Diego of 3am. At 10 pm, Junior calls and states that the wind is howling, and they just talked to some folks who fished on Sunday, and it was very hostile out at sea! Decided it was best to cancel! Can’t count how many trips this year have been cancelled due to bad weather? Oh well, plan B, called Lal, as he said he might give the Bass another shot on Monday, after our decent trip on Thursday. I was surprised he was still awake? He already had plans to fish with Ron and Richie on Taxfree. No problem adding a fourth. See you at 4:45am! I was a happy camper, not wanting to spend a three day weekend with no fishing?

Fishing Monday, 9-06-10, with Richie on his 21.5’ Parker “Taxfree”. Ron cancelled. We launched out of Sunset Harbor in Huntington Beach at 6:00 am, with our destination being the Izor’s Reef and the Pipe, in Newport Beach. There was a stiff breeze as we left the harbor, and a severe washing machine condition of 2 to 3’ seas at 3 second intervals, no bueno! At least there was no fog, just a strong marine layer! Took us nearly a ½ hour at only 12 knots to arrive at Izor’s Reef, ugly! Forget the Pipe, not with these seas, guess the call to cancel in San Diego was right on? The weather forecast was as usual this year way off? It was supposed to get nicer throughout the morning and afternoon, no such luck? The wind never got below 12 knots and gradually worked itself to 15 or more.

We started our first drift at Izor’s, and using a 1 oz lead head was not going to work, the drift was just too strong. Richie set out the drift sock, and it helped a little, however, we all switched to heavier lead heads. The first drift was decent. Lal put on a couple of solid two pounders, I was using a double rig, and twice pulled up two Sand Bass, 1.5 to 2 pounders. Rich caught the first of many picture worthy Sand Bass, about three pounds.

Set up a new drift and both Rich and myself catch good size Sand Bass, as mine was just over four pounds.

Richie catches the biggest so far, a solid 4.5 pound Sandy!

Lal gets on board with a picture worthy fish.

I jump in front with a five pounder!

Rich can’t let that happen and takes the lead with this over five pound Sand Bass.

Lal catches another Dandy Sandy.

We reach high tide and slack conditions, although, our drift is just as furious as ever, as 2 oz lead heads can’t hold bottom for more than a few seconds. The bite slows way down to just a pick here and there. Richie makes a move to another part of the reef. We get another flurry of bites, but it’s tough fishing. A couple hours after high tide, the big boys continue to come out and play. For a while it seemed like everything came in doubles or triples, as Richie and I hooked up to bigger fish together.

I can’t remember or tell by the pictures, but in about a half hour I caught a 5.5, a 5.75 and a 6 pound Sandy, while Richie added several five’s, a six and a seven, JP for the day. You be the judge, I can’t tell which is which?

This was another five pound beast and the last of the big’ns!

An hour for only two fish, and a drift that was getting ridiculous to hold bottom, white caps everywhere and building seas, we called it a day at just before 1pm.

Water temps at Izor’s was a chilly 59.9 degrees, compared to Thursday of 62.5 to 63 degrees. We caught over fifty Sand Bass, not one single Calico Bass? All fish caught on plastics, mostly five inch or larger, and most were tipped with squid strips. Richie needed some fish tacos, and kept a limit of the smaller fish, all the big’ns and the remainder were released to fight another day. It was only the second or third time out since Richie got the boat back from repairs in an auto accident involving the boat over a year ago. It looks good Richie!

Hi Tunaslam,

Very cool report and pics. Couldn't make your original plan but the good part is you didn't get beat up as bad as you would have had you followed your original plan. Always good to have a plan B, C, and D !

Glad you guys got out and had the rough ride repaid with the great catching. Missed something ..... nobody can sensibly ride, during travel, up front with the pounding, digging into the waves, and wetness but I guess all four of us could have sat on the new and improved seat (in some degree of shelter) and avoided the hull pounding and be out of the weather with.... the protection of us all by the center console ..... yep ... missed something ........ Oh Ya ....sure did !!

BTW .... TAXFREE lookin' good .... just as good as I saw her before the roll-over .... beatuiful !!

Rich has a sweet rig, he's got to be very happy with that 4 stroke Honda.
