Fishing Thursday, 9-02-10, with Lal on his 18’ boat “Rubber Ducky” with friend Jim Aku. We launched out of Sunset Harbor in Huntington Beach at 5:45 am, with our destination being the Izor’s Reef and the Pipe, in Newport Beach. For a change there were calm seas, less than a one foot wind chop, and of course this summer, a weather anomaly, Fog!
This continuing negative for the year; provided a misty and wet ride! Arriving almost soaking wet at Izor’s, the meter lit up, and the fish went on the chew! My first four fish were over three pounds, Lal and Jim had similar results.
Myself with a Sand Bass that looks older and greyer than me?

Notice the wonderful visibility in the background? The fog was dense enough to only be able to see 100 yards in any direction. The chill ran right down your spine, and someone told me it was summer time in good old Southern California? What sunny beaches, Bikinis, how about Parkas to keep you warm, never took off our jackets or sweatshirts, you have got to be kidding me, this has to a nightmare, right? It’s 95 to 100 inland and freezing your tootsies off on the water?
The three pound and over Sand Bass keep on biting! Jim lands a good one!

Lal finds this Sandy to be Dandy!

Myself with a solid four pound body!

The big’n of the day a 5.5 pound beauty! The biggest one always is a lousy picture, why is that?

Lal with another nice one!

One more for me to top off the day!

At slack tide we moved south to the Pipe and Newport Reef, we picked at the smaller fish for several hours. The wind started to cap out so we, headed north, hoping to catch the afternoon high tide bite at Izors or the Shoe, no such luck, as Mother wind came roaring in just before noon. It was blowing over 20 when we made the harbor, going from a under one foot wind chop to 3 to 4 foot choppy seas!
Water temps at the most of the areas we fished were 62 to 63 degrees, and clear for local fishing. We released over forty Bass, about four were Calico Bass, kept a couple of bleeders for fish tacos, one Sculpin and one Tree Fish.
Thanks again Lal, another great Bass’n adventure on the Rubber Ducky!
Hook up! Cory
