A time to explore and take a workmate out to da' water

Took my buddy Derek from work on an exploratory trip to where Ihad no clue what would happen….it was totally unpredictable….

Off to quail lake we went…

After about 3 hours of fishing we both had a little action but nothing too signifigant !

We each caught 1 schoolie striper

and 1 catfish ea, those kitties went about 3 ½ lbs each…we released those and fished on..(no pics of the kitties)

A few short strikes after that and after a while I said “it’s broken…we gotta fix this !” so off to a little different area about 50 yards away….

Within 10 minutes…….

HoookUP !

And guess what ?....that good ‘ol familiar sound !


Zzzzz Zzzzz then more ZZzzzzzzzzz !

It’s a TOAD !...... I state to Derek as he looks on as I battle that Leviathan !

Thump…Thump……Thump Thump !


It’s a kitty ! I tell Derek…I’m sure of it by the way it’s fighting !

But it’s a toad !...

About ¾ of the way in on the battle, Derek Tells me…..

“Your poles going out…..your Poles going out !” YOUR OTHER POLE !

I tell ‘em…..just let it go…I’m kinda busa right now ! ahhhh ha ha ha…

I don’t want to risk this fish as it was a monster !

He states it again……It’s going out…it’s going OUT !

“DON’T WORRY about it…it’s in freespool I tell ‘em…

I get the fish right at waters edge….trying to get my hand up in the gill slats to put em on deck…

I look over at my other pole……

It was like slow motion…

The pole bent !

It bent more…

Then…..



BENDO !


SUPER BENDO !

Then it rips outa the rocks it was wedged in and into the water !

I quickly hand the pole I have in my hand to Derek and he keeps tension on the beached fish #1

Fish #2 has not caught up with the slack yet and in a nick of time I grab the pole from the water and drive again !

Super bendo again but my troubles are not over with…

The line had somehow tangled around the 3rd guide and the fish ripped the guide right out from the pole and the loose guide had tangled into the 2nd guide above it….

SO…..

Here I am battled this toad with no drag from the reel and struggling to free up the tangle up…

SOMEHOW…I managed to free it up and resumed the battle……

Damn……

It’s ANOTHER Toad ! I tell Derek…

After a lengthy battle on 8 lb test….I best the ol’ beastie and the rest is history !

I watch as my work buddy battles in amazement !

Man…I can’t get ‘em IN !

I tell ‘em…..just take your time….let your drag do it’s work…let em run when he needs to and pump ‘em in when you can !

After another lengthy battle we deck his beastie and another Catfish Killa’ is BORN !

We kept 3 large kitties and released 5 that were bout 3 ½ lbs

I ended up landing two more smaller grade stripeys which brought the jailbird total to 4 for the eve…

All in all a good time….

Good job, when I was a kid, My dad, sister and I flew a Cesna 182 into Quail lake for some fishing.. My sister caught like a 12 lb catfish on a Get this, 3" gold kastmaster, bent the snot outta the hooks too, Ill never forget that..

Me, I would have grabbed the pole heading out to sea, slipping on mud, fell in the drink, lost the fish, in all the excitement had an accident in my pants, and then barely managing to get back to shore only to find two chipmunks going at it in my tackle box, only to get crapped on by a bald eagle, etc.,etc. You guys get the idea.

feels like I am almost there....

had to check my head for Eagle crap and I just did a double take in my tackle box to make sure there was no leftover chipmunk aftermath...

the accident in your pants thing I kinda pretended that I didn't read cuz that visual didn't fare well.....but as far as going into the drink, it really brought back a memory...and since I mention memory lane...I'll be dmned if I musn't tell the story...

Out time in King Harbor (redondo beach) with my brother....

I was fishing racehorse sardines and I had just previously caught a huge mackeral...
I casted hard into a heavy headwind and backlashed my baitcaster....and the mackeral slime was still all over my hand...

The weight of the racehorse sardine and the torque of the backlash "RIPPED" the pole from my hand and it fell into the water....

It was right next to the boat and sinking EVER SO SLOWLY !

Well it was a natural reaction for BOTH my brother and I to quickly reach down to grab the rod !

Well....in doing so...my meager 12' skiff tipped and we both fell into the drink (you are your own ballast in my boat !)

It didn’t capsize, just tipped enough to where water came into the boat and we both were launched into the water…

Needless to say, my brother had his pole in hand and let go of it upon hitting the water…

He panicked….!

I’m not kidding…I kept calm and collected and in a flash of an eye, as quickly as I hit that water, I swam to the stern and yanked myself back inside !

I was in my boat and I remember it like yesterday….

My brothers face !

Panicked….

Gasping…

Sheer terror on his face as he struggled to stay afloat..

Arms flailing as he dog paddled !

I KNOW it really shouldn’t be funny but I am LMAO remembering this whole ordeal…

it seems like yesterday but it was about 10 years ago…

To make the matter even more eventful, I helped my brother back into the boat and he was STRUGGLING !

But upon dragging him back into the boat, we realized that nothing had fallen in other than the 2 poles we had in our hands…

I KNEW I had a good degree of line out on my baitcaster when it backlashed so I figured the odds were good I could snag the slack if I was quick !

I tied a big Crocadile on and started dragging the sandy bottom….

I felt resistance,….

Could it be ?

YES…YESS…

It feels like a line…..

And YES…here comes the line up…..

Followed by my racehorse sardine !

Then …

Here come a rod tip up…

I am already elated that I am retrieving my baitcaster but here’s where it gets even better…

As it gets closer to the boats edge…..

I see that my brothers SPINNING pole he was using had somehow slid down the line and the reel near the bail had fouled up in it….right up against the baitcast reel….

So…I retrieved both poles in one shot and continued fishing for the day….

HOPEING that no one saw or video taped that shenanigan’ !
