View Full Version : S.W.A.T. Gathering in the South Bay. The “Rise” of the Conejo Kid! Sunday 8/29/10

Donna’s son, Brennan (Conejo Kid) was telling me how much he miss surf fishing with Dana... So I asked Donna to see if Brennan would like to join the S.W.A.T. Crew for a surf assault. Her exact words were. “I told him and he just about lost his mind… started packing his gear right away.” LOL

Saturday, I spent the day at Irvine Lake for the Dana Memorial Tree Dedication event. It was a fun Team 57 gathering and it was great seeing all those who attended. Thank you for your continued support for Team 57 and FNN. A note of thanks goes out to Irvine Lake for organizing this special tribute to Dana. :Big Grin: For all of you who witnessed the tree planting ceremony… wasn’t that something when that strong gust of wind all of the sudden appeared just as the tree was being planted…? Wow, if there was ever a sign from Dana, that was it…

Special thanks to NoHo Art for the awesome custom made canvas art dedication tribute to Dana. Everybody signed it... simply amazing. You da man bro!

Now, I know that Dana loves surf fishing for Perch and it’s no wonder that Brennan is also an absolute Perch slayer… like Father like Son. I asked Brennan what he would like to accomplish in the surf and he promptly replied, “I want to catch my first Halibut…” Well Brennan, I do believe that I can possibly help you out with that request. So I turned on the S.W.A.T. beacon and without fail, received some immediate replies.

The “Halibut Virgin” Special Tactics Team was set and we chose to hit the Short Flatties capital of the world… the South Bay. LOL

The mission was to put Brennan, aka the Conejo Kid, on his first ever Halibut.

Today wasn’t about S.W.A.T. or any of its members and it was definitely not about who catches the most or the biggest fish. It was all about trying to fill a void in a young man’s life…only temporarily. To help him accomplish a goal he set for himself and most of all, to put a smile on his face…

Even though today’s results was neither one of quantity or quality… I’m proud to declare… “Mission Accomplished.”

Congratulations Brennan, on your first of many Halibut… I know Dana would have been very proud of you. Thank you to my S.W.A.T. brothers who joined me and Brennan in the surf today and shared in this special moment. Bones, Flyngby and JerryG… always a pleasure sharing the sand with you guys.

Take care everybody… have a fantastic week!

Arthur (Wingnut)

"Wherever you are… be there totally.” My Grandfather said this to me when I was young. It took me a long time to finally understand what he meant.

Pictures tells the story…

What an awesome day! When I picked up Brennan today he was non stop excitement and non stop talking! LOL! "Mom.....And then we" " And then Bones and Arthur said..." "And then......well I fell once when we were hiking down" "And then.....Arthur tried to kill me when we were driving home from Irvine" :Secret:

He told me he can't wait to take me out and show me how it's done. I really can't wait for that trip. :Thumbs Up:

Thank you Arthur for taking Brennan on such a fun journey. I know it's something he'll never forget.......the day he caught his first halibut and 'torpedo'. I'm glad to see he has trained you quickly to do the dirty work for him. The riding on your shoulders into the surf picture was priceless. Dana would have been so proud to see him get that first halibut and seeing him surrounded by such great people.

Thank you to the SWAT brothers for helping to make this a very special day for him. When he told me "the guys and I......" I knew he truly felt comfortable and part of the crew. The smile on his face says it all.

You guys all made it a perfect weekend! :D

Brennan,

Congrats on achieving your goal today on your very first "S.W.A.T." outing! :Thumbs Up:

You were first to break the "Stinky" with the "Torpedo" and then picked up the the first "Flattie" of the day also! :Dancing Banana:

I really enjoyed fishing beside you today and was impressed with your skills working the surf! You were focused on your mission, maintained great situational awareness when the bigger waves came rolling our way, and always had a smile on your face!

Before long you will be catching :Bug Eyes: "Butts"

Arthur,

Thanks for including me in this "Special Day" We were long overdue for a S.W.A.T. Reunion. It was a great way to break out after a long layoff!

Mike & Gerry,

Also great to fish side by side with you guys again!

Brennan, congratulations on catching your first halibut from the surf! Many people strive to accomplish that goal who are many years older than you, so I'd say you're set to do great things in the world of surf fishing. You've got the talent, skills, and friends to make it happen, and I look forward to reading about your future outings! That legal is right around the corner, and since we're due for a fall spawn, I wouldn't be at all surprised if your first 30in flatty made an appearance as well.

Arthur, Mike, Jerry, and Steve, reading this as the usual college rowdiness rages in the halls brought a true smile to my face. That you took the time to make a positive difference in somebody's life speaks volumes about all of your personalities and shows the camaraderie that makes SWAT what it is. Selfless generosity is one of the rarest traits to find in people, but once you do you can be assured that those who posses it will be outstanding friends and people as a whole. That is who comprises SWAT. I sincerely wish I could have been a part of yesterday and today, and greatly regret not being able to make it happen.

Looking forward to sharing the sand with you all, whenever that may be.

All the best,

Marc

Boy ohhhhhh Boy.......What a day!

Uncle Bones just woke up LOL
After a couple days of sleep deprevation I just knocked out and slept for almost 12 hours!

Let me start by saying ....... Donna........ You brought a very special young man into this world !
As I talked to him throughout the morning it became quite clear that he has a perfect combination of kindness, compassion and skill that will serve him well throughout life. He never once complained even though conditions were less than desirable for hunting flatties. With the recent decline in water temps and very swelly conditions we knew that the day was going to be even a tougher bite than it has been lately but there was an angel following us throughout the day. Cast after cast he pounded the surfline with his LC and kept comming up with tons of salad but he never complained. When I saw him standing in the surf trying to remove the LC from his WRIST I kinda freaked out for a second and then realized it was only caught in the velcro wrist enclosure and I breathed a sigh of relief as I walked out to him and said " Let me help you with that dude". I knew that we had to protect our youngest SWAT member from the countless little things that could go wrong throughout the morning. Some of the swells that rolled in almost took out even the "Vets" of the surf and I could only imagine how big they looked to Private Brennan!
When I heard a familliar " Fish ON ! " come from my left and looked over at Arthur and Brennan I was pleased to see private Brennan's rod tip bouncing away. MMMMMMM.....Doesn't look like a flattie fight but we will gladly take a skunk beater at this time. Poseidon was testing our skills today but with our relentless desire to accomplish our goal we will prevail !
Brennan's instinct was well intact. Even when he was knocked down by a nasty shore break he took the fall but his surf weapon went straight up into the air!
Save the REEL! .......... Great job Brennan!
We had the LBC in the back of our heads as the final stand because we knew that the pancakes were in tight but the SWAT crew really doesn't like that terrain very much. After the long drive down to the protected waters I could see Brennan's face kinda light up as he saw the calmness of the area. JerryG shared his knowledge and recent experience with us and told us that the flatties were liking kroc's for some reason and that WAS the ticket. Sorry for rambling on (It's my nature) but I had such a great time!
When I dropped Arthur and Brennan off at the Wingnut Casa I looked at Brennan's little sunburned face and realized that we forgot the sunblock.....oops.....Hope we don't get chewed out by Donna....LOL
All in all and awesome day. The weather couldn't have been better and the food at the end was great. A special thanks to Arthur of course. You are ALWAYS a class act my friend!
JerryG and Steve........Always a pleasure to attack the surf with you two as well!
As for the Blackwater vs Wingnut bet.........I can't believe that Arthur put his pride and joy Mercedes on the line. That car is SICK. The G-Force acceleration factor almost made me pass out while Arthur was showing me what "She will DO". I probably should have taken scopace before sliding into the seat of that ride. I got to Irvine kinda woozy after Mr. Toads wild ride!
A big thanks to all of the FNN/Team57/SWAT members for another fantastic weekend!

It's all good Mike........He had a great day and was still talking about it this morning! Thank you for everything!!!

Of course last night as we're falling asleep he says "I hope Dana saw me catch those fish today" I told him "I know he did and he's proud of you just like I am"

Then he says "Bones says funny things and told me to cover my ears........." Hmmmmm......we'll discuss that later Mike!!!

Thank you again

Very Very Cool Arthur!
When Donna mentioned that Brennan was heading out with you guys, his face lit up like a Christmas tree.

Brennan, great job with your first, and second and third Hali's this year. There is still plenty of time to get that legal. Maybe when the Team 57 Surf Picnic comes around, you will get it then, in front of all of us and take top prize for the day.

Steve,
Was hoping to meet you also at the lake, but alas, we all have things going on besides fishing...i think?!? LOL

Mike,
Pleasure meeting you at Irvine. Hope we'll see more of each other over the course of our lives.

Gerry,
I have no clue who you are but nice going getting Brennan on the Hali's.

No, the photo was NOT photoshopped...

Most people don't know that in the days and weeks after Dana's passing. Those who were closest to Dana were inundated with 57 signs. Believe me, they were more than mere coincidences and I never discussed this outside our circle. I will not go into details but some of the things we saw or came accross were quite astonishing. Donna, Terry, Rich, Tony, myself and a few others had similar experiences to share with one another and we still have occurrences to this day.

We know you're there Dana...

Knowing what your tight knit crew went through with the passing of Dana , I take my hat off for how you bounced back and get it going as Dana would want. Great job with the young man you took under your "wing' and brought knowlege and a life long experiance in a day that he will never forget.
Well Done..

Welcome to the Team Brennan! You did a great job out there. As Mike (Bones) mentioned Brennan remained focused through out the day, never complaining or showing any indication of giving up even when the bite was dead. These are the same fundamental characteristics that all great Anglers share. After we were done fishing I asked Brennan if he played any sports or had any hobbies. He tells me " Skate boarding is cool and I really like fishing of course". He reminded me a lot of myself when I was a kid. As always I had a great time fishing with you guys. Thank you (Brennan, Mike, Arthur, and Steve)! Looking forward to the next mission.

Thank you Arthur, Mike, Steve and Jerry on taking young Brennan under your wings. It took me almost six months to get my first halibut. :Envious: Well done young man, you have a bright future in the surf for sure. That "57" in the clouds was so cool, how appropriate it is that it was in the pic that Art and Brennan was standing side by side. Dana was indeed watching.

As for the bet, Arthur, don't try to change the terms and conditions of the wager. The contract has been signed, noterized and in the hands of the attorneys. Be ready to hand over the keys to that CL63 for a month. If you wish, i'll settle for the F430 Spyder as a substitute. There's no backing out buddy, it's my turn.

Awesome report like always!

The smile says it all....
Plenty of smile that day, that's for sure. :Big Grin:

great report !! Love the pic of him on your shoulders haha.
:Big Smile:

It was our pleasure Donna, Brennan is a great kid and we look forward to have him back in the surf for more future S.W.A.T. missions. We are determined to put him on his first legal Halibut.

Great example of what FNN and fishing is all about! Thx for the Report :)

What a great day fishing. It don't get any better than that . Congrats Brennan on your first surf halibut. Thanks for sharing
You're right Patrick... doesn't get much better than that.

That beach had more pancakes than IHOP. But it got the job done. Make no mistake though, there are some monsters lurking in the surf there.

Steve, thank you for joining us on this very special mission. You were very attentive to Brennan and really took the time to show him how to work that Kroc and it resulted in him catching that first Halibut. Brennan is as much appreciative as I am for your friendship and support... :Big Grin:

Brenan, you don't know how lucky u are to have the swat crew take you under their wings. Congratulations on your first halibut, now go back and get a legal one on the next mission. lol
The legal Hali is definitely the next goal... along with getting as many surf species as we can under his belt.

Marc
The qualities that you speak of are the same ones I see in you Marc... and that's why you are a part of the S.W.A.T. Crew.

Mike, thanks for being a part of this special day. Brennan took to you like a Halibut takes to an LC. I will shift the blame towards you for the sunblock mishap. We initiated brennan into the S.W.A.T. Crew in style... especially when he fell asleep in the car. :Big Smile:

It's all good Mike........He had a great day and was still talking about it this morning! Thank you for everything!!!

Of course last night as we're falling asleep he says "I hope Dana saw me catch those fish today" I told him "I know he did and he's proud of you just like I am"

Then he says "Bones says funny things and told me to cover my ears........." Hmmmmm......we'll discuss that later Mike!!!

Thank you again
Dana was indeed watching and I know he was very proud of young Brennan. :Big Grin:
As for whatever conversations that Brennan may have overheard... I deny EVERYTHING, you know kids make up a lot of crazy things these days...

God Bless everyone of you guys!
Hey, thanks...

What a fantastic bunch of guys.........Brennan, you are one lucky Dude to have friends like these guys. Congrats on your 1st flattie, and I'm sure many more to come,..FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!

Thanks Chris, I agree, my S.W.A.T. brothers are the BEST!

Private Brennan, you don't know how lucky you are to be a part of the SWAT crew. :Envious: They've been rejecting my membership applications for years.
Way to go on making the kid dreams come true guys. The SWAT Make a Wish Foundation, that has a nice ring to it. Really makes my day to see something like this. Art, hope you can join the gang for the Labor day get together this weekend. Bring you crew if you like.
To be considered for the S.W.A.T. Crew, you first have to do some surf fishing Vince... all you do is fish at pay lakes. LOL Good hanging out with you guys at Castaic last weekend bro.

When SWAT organizes to put you on your first halibut I'd say there's a 100% chance you're going to get your first halibut :D WTG
LOL, thanks Gavin... It was really nice meeting you at Dana's Memorial Event in Irvine.

This is the best report and pics i have ever read. You all are the best in my eyes :Applause:
Thanks Rob, I appreciate that very much.

I have to say that this is my favorite SWAT report to date. :Big Grin: Wow, we all would like to be in Brennan's shoes for one day that's for sure. This is what Dana had envisioned when he said "Family, Friends, Fun and Fishing". Congrats on your first flatty little SWAT warrior and kudos to all those responsible for his success. :Applause:
Arthur, like Vincent said, please try to come hang out with us this weekend.
Just trying to uphold the team 57 Spirit that Dana started Binh.
It was fun hanging out with da boyz last Sunday at Castaic, see ya soon bro.

What a great day on the water, congrats on getting that first hali in the surf Brennan...I am sure there are many more to come in your future! Thanks for sharing this special trip here on FNN in true Team57 fashion :Thumbs Up:

Trust me, there will be plenty more Flatties in the kid's future Aaron. These youngsters are the future of Team 57. :Big Grin:

God Bless Everyone,

Thanks Robert, it was a pleasure meeting you and your son and chatting with you a bit at Dana's Memorial Event in Irvine. Keep up the nice work out there buddy. :Big Grin:

Thanks Tony.

Arthur.. Top Notch my man.. I read every thread and post from all you guys . From beer boy to Bob Trout Only too one leg, what happend to that guy? and all the rest of the loyal FNN crew. Knowing what your tight knit crew went through with the passing of Dana , I take my hat off for how you bounced back and get it going as Dana would want. Great job with the young man you took under your "wing' and brought knowlege and a life long experiance in a day that he will never forget.
Well Done..

TP
It was tough losing the Leader of the Team, but we will honor him by continuing what he has started. The "Family, Friends, Fun and Fishing" Team 57 spirit will live on, especially in the hearts and minds of youngsters like Brennan. :Big Grin:

Jerryg
Jerry, thanks for joining us and giving us your support for this special mission. You were an intrical part of the success. :Big Grin: Brennan does have all the right qualities to be a successful fisherman doesn't he...? Great fishing with you a couple of days ago my friend, see ya soon.

Couldn't of said it better myself.
Good work guys

This is the best report I have read in a very long time. Brought a tear to my eye, a smile to my face and joy to my heart. Loved seeing that big ol'smile on Brennan's face in every picture and the love and friendship so obvious in every picture. This is what Team 57 is all about.

Congratulations Brennan on reaching your goal!
Thanks Tammy, nice seeing you & Mike at Dana's Memorial Event.

Arthur,

Helping the next generation to steer down a path of sucess is what I enjoy most! At work or at the playground they must stay focused to be successful!

Remember I would not be here had my 13 Y/O son Brad persuaded me to go hand line fishing in NPH for Bat Rays back in 2005!

Standing beside Brennan in the surf and watching him work tells me a lot about how well he payed attention in "Surf Fishing 101 Class" with "Professor 57"

Had I not listened to "GerryG" about the croc it would have not crossed my mind!

I am still very much a student for life here!
