Squid is good, but no. It's on something freshwater fishermen see quite often-

This just shows me that you are very observant with the fish you catch. If fishermen would just take a few extra seconds to look closely at the fish they catch, they would see some of these totally awesome colors and markings. Birds too have really cool metallic-like pigment in their feathers. Mother Nature is quite an artist! By the way these cool photos were taken by Bill "Musky" Modica from BigBluegill.com, another really great website.

Slow down and look at your fish yes, but not so long that it may put the fish's life in danger.

Agreed. That's exactly why I said "a few extra seconds" and not minutes.

At first I thought it was a lure..

then after a few seconds of looking, I was like: "DANG, thats some incredible detailing.. even some melanophores!"

Gotta love macro shots like this. Beautiful.

Thanx Jeff for the props. I have been into fishing and aquariums for a lond time. I have always had cichlids in my aquariums so it looked familiar. I really do pay attention to alot of the details in the fish I catch. It's cool that you bring up stuff like this on here instead of "LOOK AT THIS BIG O FISH CAUGHT".

For many years I did fish taxidermy, mostly reproductions, and I learned to take the time to really look closely at the colors on live fish so I could color the mounts correctly with an airbrush and hand painting. I mean I really carefully examined the fish to figure out what colors were involved, how they overlapped, what pigments blended together to make separate colors, scale colors, etc., etc.. Plus, I respect fish as living creatures so I want to learn all I can about them. (I know it sounds corny, but it's my true feelings about all living things.)
And yes...CICHLIDS RULE brother!
