Rich and Noah

Took the family ‘camping’ up to the Bishop area for a couple nights staying at Cardinal Village near Aspendell. It was time to get back to nature and visit my old stomping grounds. I haven’t been up there in 10+ yrs and not much has changed which is a good thing. Bishop was a regular spot for us growing up and staying at Cardinal made things a lot easier for the gang.
After arriving ~2pm on Sat, fished the creek around the village in some regular spots to ensure they would all catch something. First stop in the creek, my daughter caught the first stocker on her Barbie Pole w/ my son on the net. The drag on those Walmart poles are a doozie!

Then it was Noah’s turn catching a small brown.

Wife caught the next one, and after about 8 fish, decided to keep 2 for dinner.

We stopped by North Lake and Sabrina just to check things out, but the wind was blowing hard so headed back to the lodge to try the Pond and beat the wind. The Pond was tough but managed 1 more for dinner, caught on a fly/bubble combo.

Finished Day 1 with some steaks, fresh fish, s’mores, and board games back at the cabin.

Day 2. Plan was to rent a boat at South Lake but knew the wind might be a factor so got a slower start and headed up to South Lake by 0830.

The Lake was blowing and the boating was a no-go, so headed back down to Intake II just to relax w/ a pole in the water. South Lake was the highest I’ve ever seen it! Never fished Intake II and expectations were low since the wind was hitting us there as well. But, walked over towards the dam and hooked this nice 15” brown on a salmon egg. A guy next to me said, “Browns don’t eat salmon eggs.” I guess this one didn’t know any better.

Headed back to the Village and let the kids ride horses while I hit the creek north towards the old mine.

Caught 2 more browns, a few native rainbows and released ever thing on Day 2.

On the way back (Day 3), stopped at the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery and Whitney Portal. I learned that the hatchery was destroyed by the 2008 flood so not a lot of stuff there (still rebuilding).
