Spent the day fishing with a couple of my S.W.A.T. brothers on the Santa Barbara Coastline. Mikey (Exfactor) was generous enough to invite Mike (Bones) and myself to board his vessel for a fun day of fishing with friends.

It was tough making bait today for some reason so we stopped by the bait receiver for a half scoop of Anchovies and off we went.

Spent most of the morning drift fishing and throwing swimbaits. The bite was relatively tough out there today, but we did manage a couple of short Flatties, a 30” legal Flattie and a Shark. Strange conditions out there with the water temperature fluctuating quite a bit throughout the day. But the weather was absolutely beautiful.

Mike was missing the sand so we dropped him off on the pier and he worked the sand for the last couple of hours while Mikey and I continued our hunt for the elusive 40” plus Halibut.

We pulled the plug around mid-afternoon, grabbed an awesome lunch at Rudy’s and headed home.

Thanks again Mikey for your hospitality and friendship! You invited us to fish with you on your boat, took us to a great place to eat afterwards, AND even fillet the fish for us… WOW, what a pal! :Big Grin: Can I have Mike wax your boat for you next time?
Looking forward to heading back out there with you again soon… we’ll get Mike straightened out in no time!

Mikey filleted this Halibut in five minutes. It would have taken me half and hour.
Note: This fish had almost completely developed egg-sacks in it. Proof of a Fall season spawn? Hmmmmmm… interesting… topic for debate. :???:

Arthur, I am very happy to see you, Mike, and Mikey out fishing together and having an awesome time. It's what being a SWAT member is all about, and I look forward to rejoining the brotherhood sometime soon. I seriously missed hitting the surf this weekend, and these reports are great to get fishing fix. I hope Mike enjoyed his solo session as well.

A complete different angle on fishing the big blue today gents!
We were on the water before the sun came up at 6am and tried very hard to find the bait, birds and seals. Seems like the El Nino turned El Nina on us everywhere along our socal coastline this year. I know it's been a tough bite for me and I've heard so many stories of how it's affected the off shore anglers as well.I got to see first hand what the guys on boats go through in order to have a semi successful day on the water lately. I was thrilled to get out on the big blue with Arthur and Our capitan "Mikey" for the grand tour but it was a little bumpy and by 9:30 I had a headache and some acid indigestion going on. MMMMMM.......I look at Arthur and say " I need to get my feet on the sand and pound the surf".
My way of saying " I don't want to feel any worse"
Arthur had packed all of us some fantastic food so there I was......Walking along a beautiful beach with all of the ladies promptly migrating their way to the sand. By the time that the SWAT coastal assault crew met back up .....The smell of coppertone and the sight of bronze california students was everywhere. Definately a benifit on a slow day of fishing for sure!
I only walked about a mile of sand without a single bite and just decided to slow down and take in the sights and relaxation that poseidon offered me today. Sometimes.....It's better that way. Sometimes I get so involved in finding the fish that I come away let down and disappointed but yesterday I had a very relaxing day with no concerns. Just what the doctor ordered IMHO. A big thanks to Mikey and Arthur for another fine way to spend a sunday. We'll get them next time boyz!

I think "Bones" must have spotted that "Fillet Knife" early on and it probably decided to bail before he became "Shark Chum" Oh! I forgot about issues there Bones and probably a wise choice on you part!

Besides you got the best scenery of the day! Quit sure that on the beach there were bigger than the 30" Flattie Models! :Bug Eyes:

Great job gentlemen!

Damn, wingnut always get the nicest gigs. Nicest gear, fish on the nicest boats and always with the coolest people. :Envious: No surprises here Art, people are drawn to winners. Another nice Hali Art, the bigger models are rare from the beach. I guess that's about the average size out there?
I'm going to try and stop by the Irvine lake event this Saturday. Bringing Stacy and the kid.

Your problem is obvious Mike.
If you had a Breakfast Beer instead of coffee then washed it down with a few more beers you would have felt like a million bucks.

Nice job gents, another beautiful flatty. :Envious:
What do you think all this HOT weather will do with the Halibut activities?
Developed egg sacks right now? Looks like the fall spawn is the logical answer.
Hey Mike, i would definitely rather be with you on the sand checking out the land hali"butts".

Nice hali. Isnt the roe edible for california halibut? Whenever I open any flatfish, the roe actually looks like it would make excellent caviar.
