Hey yall, sorry for the late post, but i went out yesterday hoping that the calicos would have picked up because of the warm weather, but the boys made some great bait the night before: squid. we started out in some kelp right outside the harbor, where i hooked something big, but my drag was set to loose. i told myself i needed to redeem myself. we didnt get anyting at that spot besides a sandy. we picked up and moved over towards la jolla. we were pretty far out, around the ridge, and captain trevor stopped because he saw some yellow on the meter. so we dropped anchor and also immediately people were hooking up on some really healthy vermillion rockfish, with some starries mixed in. the biggest yellow i had caught to this point was about ten lbs, nothing really to write home about. anyways im fishing my sealine x 20 with 20lb fluro leader with 20 mono and spectra backing and a 2/0 hook with a 1/2 ounce egg sinker. i let my live squid go out and down for a while till its almost at the bottom when i feel it getting thumped. i wait a few seconds and i set the hook. instantly the crew knew it was a big one. it dragged me up to the bow where it proceeded to take a good amount of my spool. i had caught dorado and tuna before but i dont usually fish for nice pelagics, im usually a bass guy, so captain trevor was next to me the whole time coaching me. i eventually got it turned and started to pull it back towards the boat. it took me around the boat twice and we got a couple of glimpse of it and saw it was a real quality yellow tail. finally it came up and close to the boat where trevor was waiting with the gaff. i was stoked, and i couldnt have done it without the crew. anyways after the yellow i caught three really nice reds, and hooked up on another yellow but it instantly broke me off. we eventually moved to the kelp, which is my bread and butter, where i caught a few smaller calicos, and a couple of pencil barries. all in all one of my favorite days on the water. the chubasco is the best operation in san diego, and they work their asses off. thanks again guys. sorry for the long read but i had to get it out. grilled up the yellow, so good.
tight lines guys,
