Good evening,
My son had a furlough today, so a few days ago, he had mentioned that he wanted to go fishing on Sunday, so I told him it was a strong possibility. I have been watching the counts really go downhill for local fishing, so up until last night, I was very hesitant to go spend the money it costs to fish on sport boats nowadays, especially with the very slow local fishing. Then I decided that we would give it a try, he has been doing very well where he is at currently, respooled his gear with fresh line, and hit the sack about midnight hoping that I would be able to get up as early as I needed to to go pick him up, then drive back to Long Beach in time to make the morning ½ day.
Well, I woke up at 4:00 am, loaded all our gear into the car, and headed up to North Santa Ana to pick up my son. I arrived at 5:15 am, stopped for coffee, and jumped on the 5 north to the 22 west and headed to Long Beach.
We arrived at Long Beach Marina at 6:00 am, unloaded the car, and was en route to the office to purchase our tickets, and that’s when my friend who runs the City texted me and informed me that he had cancelled the boat, due to lack of people. Great, this is the only ½ Day that departs at 7:00 am, the other boats in San Pedro leave at 6:30 am, and now I didn’t even know if we were going to make it to San Pedro in time.
I asked Jason what he wanted to do, and he said let’s try to make it, and we loaded the car back up, and headed towards San Pedro. We just came over the Vincent Thomas bridge and it was pushing 6:30, so I called LA Harbor, and the office person told me they would wait a few for us! That was cool, so we made it to the landing a few minutes later, purchased our tickets, and jumped at the boat.
Crew today was Captain John, Eric on deck, and I forgot the galley girls name (sorry). John made his safety speech, and informed us that we would be fishing out front today, and that fishing had been on the SLOW side. He said we would be targeting bass and barracuda. Today’s set ups:
1. 12 lb test #2 hook ¼ oz slider.
2. 15 lb test #2 hook 3 oz torpedo
3. 25 lb test Tady C Mint Green.
We made a quick stop to get bait at San Pedro Bait, and we were off to the fishing grounds. The water was FLAT calm today, which was great. We arrived a short time later, and dropped the hook on SPOT #1.

Jason made a cast, and was instantly followed up by a cuda!

I made a few casts, and got short bit a few times, and finally hooked my first fish of the day, which was a short cuda. The cuda were boiling fairly well, but I could tell they were all shorts. So then I decided to grab my 12 lb rod, and fish some Calico Bass. First cast, I get a short.

Then Jason makes another cast, and gets one to stick. At the same time, I get freight trained, and set the hook on another short bass. Yes…short fish, but it was fun, and already 100% better fishing then I thought it would be already!

My son decided to break out the light gear too, and he started to catch some shorties!

Then he makes another cast, and this fish at least pulls back a little, and he finally gets the first legal calico of the day!

He makes a few more casts with the light gear, and scores another legal, this one bigger….
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/ghettodad/Matt%20Walsh%20with%20Jason%208%201%202010/SDC12258.jpg
He decided to grab his jig stick again, and heads to the starboard side of the boat, and comes back with this NICE calico on the iron!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/ghettodad/Matt%20Walsh%20with%20Jason%208%201%202010/SDC12259.jpg
Then he lands TWO legal cuda back to back, and I was like WTF?? Lol…so far hes got 3 legal calicos ( 1 NICE one) and 2 legal cuda! I have gotten nothing but shorts so far, so I make another cast, and of course, during the calico bass bite, I get a SAND BASS!! LOL! Its ok, im finally on the board!
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/ghettodad/Matt%20Walsh%20with%20Jason%208%201%202010/SDC12260.jpg
As far as legals go, this was pretty much it for this spot, but we did continue to pick at the shorts very well, which was fine, it was action! So John makes a move to find some more legal action, and the next spot produced NOTHING! Lol..its all good, John didn’t waste too much time on this spot, and we had time for one more spot.
This spot was a little better, and after awhile, I finally got a nice bass on the chovie!
LOL! THE STORY ON THE WAY I LOOK IN THIS PIC..FIRST THE SUN WAS BLARING IN MY EYES, THEN THE KID TELLS ME HE CANT SEE MY FACE, SO I SCRUNCH DOWN…LMFAO….
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i292/ghettodad/Matt%20Walsh%20with%20Jason%208%201%202010/SDC12261.jpg
I ended up getting one more legal on this spot, then the macks moved in..grrrrr..and it was time to head home!
Not a bad day considering I REALLY thought we weren’t going to catch crap the way the fish counts have been the last 3-4 days, and it was nice getting my son back on the water.
Final count
GD 3 legal calicos 1 legal sand bass about 30 short misc
JASON 3 legal calicos 2 legal cudas about 30 short misc
