Fishing Saturday, 7-31-10, with Lal on his 18’ boat “Rubber Ducky”. We launched out of Davies in Los Alamitos at 4:30 am, with our destination being the Palos Verde Peninsula. It was a pleasant surprise to find calm seas and only a slight breeze. Not a very common situation this year? However, the heavy mist wetted our faces, and chilled our bodies to the bones, is this really the end of July?
Needing a respite from the insanity I faced this week, our company experienced a fire that destroyed 60% of our plant, and put nearly all of our 75 full time employees on unemployment for quite some time. Fortunately no one was hurt, in a five hour fight, before firemen could extinguish the blaze, most of the $ millions of dollars in damages to plant and equipment is fully covered by insurance.

We made a few drifts in the grey light on various structure spots, catching a couple of Calico Bass and One Sand Bass. Moved out into a bit deeper water, and found the Calico Bass on the chew!

We re-drifted this area several times before the bite died at around 8am. We released 20 mixed Bass, mostly Calico’s to three pounds. We also caught a variety of rockfish, about 15, Reds, Johnny Bass, Starries, Kelp Rockfish, Chocolate, and Sculpin. all released.
Worked our way down the coast, with little results. Found the Horseshoe full of boats and no action. Metered lots of fish with lockjaw. Ran on to some other structure spots picking at a Bass here and there. Only six fish caught after 8am Called it at 2pm.
Thanks Lal, I needed my fix on the Rubber Ducky, after a trying week, and more to come!
