I woke up and got the pier at about 7am....I started the day catching a baby halibut, my first one ever!!..I was pretty excited, but I had to let him go so I can catch him when he's bigger. Then the rest of the day it was Perch and I think Sardines...They were pretty small and hitting the sabiki rig right when it hit the water. Everybody at the pier was catching something, but mostly perch. So it was a pretty good day at the pier.

Here's a pic of the halibut....

Congrats on your first halibut! Keep on trying and before you know it you'll be landing legal size halibuts.

They are the fish of a 1000 cast here on the westcoast when tossing lures. I've caught 8 shorts this year so far and no keepers.
Last year I got 2 legals on my first day fishing for H buts. Its been why no more.......:Crying: Like you said Keep trying, its all I can do.

Next time, try ghost shrimp, and C-rig it! You might catch a nice calico perch!

I'm going out there next week...how do you C-rig it?Simple, just slide an egg sinker on the line, then tie a swivel on, then your leader. the carolina rig is the best rig for bottom-feeders, especially big perch.

But then again, you may run into problems when using it from the pier.

You should get yourself a license and hit the surf though, its alot funner =)

Oh yeah,,, still need your halibut cherry popped! HAHA

Good luck, use a whole chovie on a 3-way swivel and keep the bait moving. Cover sand.

Try fishing from the rocks where sand and rocks meet

Now that I have seen the picture, it is a sand dab like midgettosser says. Still a nice catch and very tasty too.

Well...I guess it's not a halibut, hopefully I'll be able to catch one soon!

Sand Dabs dont have a size requirement, and they are quite tastey. If you're fishing for halibut from the pier you don't want to be towards the end of the peir. Just head out past the waves and start fishing
