I’m going to make this a quick report. The day before, bass fishing was stellar with fish willingly biting the sardines. Our first spot of the day was slow, so we quickly moved on, and we found some better fishing. Anglers who were fly lining sardines were getting some nicer bass. Meanwhile, my dad and I were fishing plastic, and getting bites almost every cast. My dad caught and released a calico that looked to be about 3-1/2 pounds. I was fishing a ˝ oz. Original Cotee Leadhead with a red flake colored blam, and it worked like a charm. The key was to get it right at the edge of the kelp and letting it sink a little bit, risking getting stuck in the weeds, and that happened to me a lot (I lost about five leadheads). In the end, I think I got ˝ the fish on the drop, and ˝ the fish on the retrieve. I did not want to lose all my original Cotee heads, I tried the Ocean Logic Cotee knockoff, and that still worked like a charm. I loaned a few anglers the red blam, and they caught some fish on it, too.

All in all, it was a pretty good day. Everybody caught some bass whether they were fly lining a bait or even a ˝ oz. sliding sinker. I think I even saw a very nice sand bass come up on a sliding sinker rig. Anyways, I had a fantastic day fishing the plastic, catching 15 legal bass to two pounds and about the same amount in shorts, and releasing most of the legals. My dad did very well on the smoke sparkle colored grub, catching about 8 legals and several shorts, also releasing most of the legals. Bass fishing is heating up, and the fish love that red color. Great times, great fishing!

By the way, I’m on a two day leaving tomorrow night out of Dana Point…I plan to make a banner report with tons of pictures – I just hope I can come through for you guys on that, but I’ll sure give it a try!

This picture doesn’t do the fish much justice, but it was pretty nice…Dad with a Nice Calico

Hi Jackpot Jimmy,

Great report as always. Been looking for the New Del Mar down on the 'Shoe' as well as actually 90% of the moo-moo fleet from Redondo to Dana Wharf !! Killer fuel burining expedition for sure !! Counted 21 moo-moos on Wednesday. Can you imagine jumping on the Patriot , Freelance, or the Nautilus and find yourself up in front of Angel's Gate !?! Huh ?! Or expecting to go to Catalina and bam ... you're on the 'Shoe'?

WTG on the plastics.

Fishy picture .... and fishy not looking as big as it really is !! Tell me about it ! My Bass tipped the bar by 3 inches on my buddys 7 or 7 1/2 lb cuda ! Mine was as wide as long ..... as you can tell !!

Nice Calicos you got there Jackpot Jimmy. Hey do you use warbaits jigheads? Those will definitley reduce snags in the kelp, but I understand that is costs substantially more than you regular leadheads. Oh and good luck on the 2 dayer!
