Fishbones

So after my last mission to Catalina with Ron 'Fishinone" and his buddies Bong and Scott they had brought up the subject of shark fishing and after a little chat we decided to try at it. We had made the plans and the date was set to try our luck at it, after hearing many reports of threshers crashing of MDR thats where we decided to launch from, Ron "Fishinone' had brought his center council out for the trip.
We did a little research before the trip and loaded up with dead mackerel and shark trolling lures for the trip, After a quick launch we were out the harbor with baits in the water, the weather was perfect and within seconds i see the bait boat do a wrap on some anchovies or sardines. A good sign right? You find the bait you find the sharks,.,.well not exactly ,..so we keep trolling up the coast for a bit with no luck. A few hours had gone by and we decided to try fishing some kelp beds and boiler rocks only accessible from boat, within minutes Scott hooks up and starts fighting a fish, at first i was not really giving it much attention until hes saying how strong it was felt. I stood next to him watching him fight this fish, it was weird because it just hugged the bottom and did not really make to big of a run or pull drag,.,i am thinking,.,o man this can be the right kind and my blood starts pumping and i am getting excited just as it finally shows its self with a quick fly by of white under body

this was the biggest baddest bat ray i had ever seen i swear it must have been 6'+ across and 3' thick. It looked like a huge 1000Lb Manta ray,.,.which i have seen in Mexico so i could compare there size easily and this fish was ,enormous, big, huge, gargantuan, humongous, jumbo, tremendous, large, massive, gigantic, like i said,.,.the biggest thing i had ever seen so after a short fight it ended up breaking off due to a bad or over stressed knot, I know its a bummer and funny thing is i think i was more upset than Scott the angler was only because i have never seen one that big before in my life. So we continued on our day in the kelp for a bit longer, Bong got a nice calico and Ron with a nice bat ray which gave up some fight.
here Ron is watching his spool get lower and lower,.,.o man is it gonna stop hes thinking..

after that we finally started motoring back to MDR. On the way we saw a few boats anchored up so we decided to drift it a bit to see if anyone wanted to play, and they did,it was wide open i tell you,

all the Lizard fish and mini sanddabs you wanted with the occasional mackerel flurry from time to time but nothing really worth getting the fillet knife out,.,.by that time it was around 2:30 and time for things to shut off for a few hours so i opted to get dropped off at the dock and the guys fished for a little more.
