Took my son, his friend and friend’s father out for a day of striper fishing on the upper lake on Tuesday. Since my goal was to have my guests & son catch fish, we decided to bait fish the buoy line with sardines and anchovies for stripers.

The day was very nice with mild breezes and temps in the 80s to mid 90s. We were at the buoy line by about 9:30am. Metered around the length of the line and found a few marks on the west side of the canyon. We were fishing in about 110 feet of water. The fish were scattered but fairly deep, around 80-90 feet.

Put out the lines with a small split shot & let the bait slow sink. We waited and waited for about 30 minutes before we had our first hook-up. Thereafter, we had bites every 10 minutes or so. We fished there until about 1:00pm and caught about 20 schoolie sized stripers.

We decided to run to the fish arm to see if there was any better quality fish. Marked one area of fish and anchored for about ½ hour with no hits. Continued to meter the south side of the fish arm, but, didn’t’ see any good concentrations of fish.

For the last 2 hours, we decided to run back to the buoy line to finish off the day. Anchored a little west of our original spot. Dropped the lines and waited. Within 20 minutes, we got our first hookup. And, again, about every 10 minutes we had a fish going. Finished the day catching over 30 stripers. Most about 2lbs. Kept about 8 for tacos.

It was really a nice day of fishing. Good weather, nice company and steady fishing. And, my goal of having my guests and son catch fish was met. Here are the pix.

Lots of this.

im all about the catch and release fishing but when it comes to stripers kill them all!!!!! i want castaic to stay a good striper fishery and weeding them out will help stunting the growth of those pesky things. ive come to accept the great heyday of castaic largie fishing is over
