Vail's topography reminds me a lot of lakes I've fished in San Diego. In fact, it fishes a lot like Barrett, minus the soft cover that is typical of Barrett, especially this time of year. Coming to think of it, I didn't have to remove vegetation from any of my baits today, which is a first for me. Removing lipless baits from sticks and jigs from rocks? That's a different story, but quite telling of what was necessary in order to get fish to the boat.
We got to the lake at 6:30 and by 7:30, we had a good 15 bites, 5 fish in the boat and some fish that were long distance released. These Vail fish fight hard. With all the threadfin in the water, I can see where they get all the energy from.
Throughout the day, Art's knowledge of the lake was made apparent at every stop, and I don't think there wasn't one where we didn't catch fish from. Every bait Albert and I were throwing caught fish, although the bulk were caught on bottom contact techniques, primarily Senkos, texas rigged craws and worms, and jigs. A handful of fish ate the spinnerblade, but because I didn't see a steady reaction bait bite develop, the majority of the day was spent throwing 10# fluorocarbon on my jig stick, and 8# fluorocarbon on my light texas rig rod.
We ended the day with about 60 to 65 fish between Albert and I. The bite was consistent all day, and we didn't spend more than 10 minutes in between bites. We had several doubles, one that occurred while i was taping Albert on a fish. We got visited by a duck who chilled with us on the deck of Art's boat, and saw a family of bobcats as we were leaving the lake.
Art Hill's Guide Service....money well spent. It was our pleasure fishing with you Art. We'll be definitely calling to schedule another trip when you have some open slots. Our sides are hurting from laughing so hard throughout the day, and our forearms are sore from all the hook sets. Albert's fish time out on a bass boat was definitely a memorable experience for him.
Where else can you fish an entire lake to yourself? Where else is the bite amazing throughout the entire day? Where can you perfect and hone different techniques and have fish willing to help you? Vail Lake is the real deal.
