Well, this was gonna be my first trip to the salt so I didn't really know what to expect out in the harbor. So on Sunday morning, my bro-n-law, two of his co-workers and I, headed out to Newport Harbor around 6:30am(thanks Co) and arrived at Davey's Locker at around 7am.

After picking up some bait, we setup our gear, and got to fishing. Me, not know how to fish the salt, I setup up my rod with a rigging that I've been having great results with on the lakes, the DS.

Bam!!! The first catch of the morning on the DS"

The other guys had rigged some type of Carolina rigging and here are a couple of catches that they were able to produce.

"...and halibut"

Although we didn't catch anything worth bringing home the action was consistent throughout the day which IMO made this outing successful, and we all had a great time and way too many laughs out there in the harbor. We are definitely gonna plan another trip to the salt in the near future.

Thanks for reading.

WTG on the rental.
If that is a Round Ray you guys are insane and lucky you didn't get hit with the stinger at the end of the tail.
After getting hit and having a 1/8" piece of stinger in my finger for 6 weeks of pain ' Use Caution '

Bat Rays or even Big Bat Rays can be picked up and handled but not round rays.

Damn M street looks busy lol.

Grats on your first trip in the salt! It's addicting though, watchout!
That's a pretty good size spotty and halibut for your first time. I think I got skunked on my first 4 trips to the harbor, so you're already ahead of the curve!

Thanks DR. Yup, those rental are pretty cool for the price.

As for the Round Ray, we were very careful and cautious(thinking about the Crocodile Hunter) with those suckers. We didn't lay a hand on them. The thing that sucks the most about those rays is that they were everywhere. I think we pulled out about 7 or 8 of them out of the harbor.

Oh and don't even get me started about the Bat Rays. I hooked into one of those guys during this trip and it almost spooled me. Luckily my line snapped at the hook when I cranked down on the drag.

Thanks swank. Yeah, Main st and Balboa was really crowded when we left Davey's Locker, but we didn't mind with all the "Heathers"(girls) walking around.

And you're right about it being addicting., I'm already planning another trip out. :Envious:

First pic is a "Queenfish"

They quickly loose the blue highlight when out of the water. I have caught several of them in past trips to the harbor!

Next time pin it back on to a bigger setup and go for a nicer Flattie!
