Spent the weekend down in Newport Beach to beat the heat in SGV. So, naturally, my son and I fished the harbor on the kayak a few hours on both Saturday and Sunday.

We fished Saturday from 9:00am to about 1:30PM. The day was sunny and comfortable from the start. And, immediately, my son started catching spotties off the docks. Basically, from the AM to about noon, the bite was fairly steady. We managed to catch quite a few spots, sand bass and about 4 halibuts. I actually caught my biggest NPH halibut so far.

Sunday was quite a bit different. The weather was overcast and a bit breezy. Although the conditions looked very good, for some reason, the fish were much less active compared to Saturday. My son managed to catch about 4-5 spotties, missed a few hits and broke off a couple on the pilings. I managed only 1 spottie and missed a few pick-ups. We kept pounding the docks, but, the bite never really picked up. We again fished to about 1:30PM.

We caught most of the fish on drop shot and jig head Gulps. We threw the spinner and LC a bit, but, no takers.

Met Elevated who was fishing with his GF on Sunday. Nice meeting you guys and I hope you had better luck than we had.

In any case, as always, it was a lot of fun fishing and cruising in the harbor. Thanks for reading and here are some pix.

Hey, that's right. I did see you. The fishing was good on Saturday. And, mostly, it beat sitting in 105 degree heat in Arcadia. Hope you did well. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the post. Unfortunately, I didn't have a tape measure. But, it was probably close. It sure fought well and was really mad when we brought it close to the kayak.
