Sup fishn' guys and gals,
Los Angeles Rod and Reel Club held one of two fishing outings of the year for inner city kids on Monday, 12 July 2010. This was the Salt Water outing for the year and a few of us Team57 members stepped up when we got the call to lend a helping hand. LARRC had five boat load of kids heading out of Pierpoint Landing and we were to report for check in at 6:00 a.m. as reported by Capt'n who is a member of LARRC. Capt'n and his son fishyboy spent the night on the Boat and did a lil fishing the night before.
Check-in time rolls around, I finally get to meet and greet Capt'n, fishyboy, flyngby and his son. Shortly Fishbones and GeordyBass roll in. Good seeing ya again Fishbones and I got to meet GeordyBass. Next Russ88 shows up and later Greg shows up who was on another boat for the day, with the rest of us on the Southern Cal. We were all excited for what the day would hold in store for us. Nice over cast morning and we lucked out because it was overcast most of the day and cool for the kids. So we sign in at the LARRC booth and we were given a "T" for the day, cool! The LARRC guys were very nice and appreciative for all our efforts. The booth had alot of munchies to fuel everyone up for the day and boy were the kids in Heaven, I was just hoping I wouldn't see much of it again out on the deck, lol.

Fishbones chatting with Greg.

Now were rolling out, oh-yeah! Off to the bait barge for some dines, arrived around 7:30 a.m. As we were rolling up the kids got excited again. They enjoyed watching the dines being loaded and Loved the dog hanging out. I got a kick out of some of them yelling look at the big fish, I laughed and told them, BIG?, wait till you see the big ones you will catch today.

Flyngby busted out a rod to start getting some kids on some Macks, they were in Heaven and many kids caught there first ever fish. Of course many did not want to touch any at first, they laughed and teased each other about that. Then Fishbones brings over a pole and some of the LARRC guys. Many kids had fun reeling in a fish.

Thanks "NG" for taking the time to start the post with so many wonderful pics and many more to come!

Thanks to CAPT'N and the LARRC for the invite to help again at this very special event! I have looked forward to this return trip out of Pierpoint since last year’s event! Thanks to the Members of the LARRC and the Staff at Pierpont for the Special Day with the kids!

They take these kids out of the inter-city and most of them have never fished and some have never seen a lake or stream let alone the ocean!

So the first group of kids arrives and head counts are taken at boarding and now we are waiting for Group 2! Learning from last year I immediately welcomed them aboard and had some fun at the bait tank introducing them to our baits of the day and overcome the fear of even touching something that swims!

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z286/flyngby/P7070150.jpg
We were the first boat loaded and got a quick getaway to the bait receiver and eventually the "HOT SPOT" of the day thanks to a Captain Stan and the Crew!
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z286/flyngby/P7070151.jpg
As NG mentioned above at the bait receiver many were focused on the bait coming on board but Alex “Fishbones” and I had a strategy to get an early start on the catching part of the trip! It did not matter that they were Mackerel or YFC as we cycled through probably 30 or so kids that were able to get their first tug on the line and the other Mentors aboard joined the action to get even more kids involved!

The engines fire with fully loaded bait wells and it is now time to play catch the flying Dines and Pinheads with the various airborne sea life that were following and looking at the kids for a free and meal!

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z286/flyngby/P7070153.jpg
A short time later Capt Stan call a decky to staff the bait tanks and with a chum line in the water he quickly sets anchor on our only spot of the day!

Great day out there and great to see some new members helping out there this year!

Can’t wait until next year!

Steve

PS! Watch out for this little gal in future posts! These fish were not handoffs. She managed to over come the fear of grabbing bait , hurting it’s lip with the hook, sending the little guy on a quick trip to the bottom and listened to the instructions of Capt. Stan and changed her bait very often! Rewarded Well!

This event was a complete success and so much fun to be a part of, teaching these kids the ropes only took a few minutes.
After that they were fishing animals and it was mayhem on the dech with toad bass and cudas hitting the deck left and right.
It was wide open at one point and seemed to be the perfect trip, we never left that spot sitting on it all day slaying away.
The captain and crew did a great job and i look forward to the next event put together for the kids again.
Here are the few pics i took while off the boat after that i was too busy hooking and handing to those still learning the gig.

Leaving the bait barge, the kids had a blast again throwing up all the lil bait to the gulls. Then fishbones tries to coax one down to get it out of his hand but with tooo many excited kids around no takers.........
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/mleegal66/LARRC%20W%20TEAM57%20PIERPOINT%20LANDING/CIMG2307.jpg

Captain Stan then gets us to our secret lil honey hole for the day......the kids, big and small are getting giddy, Capt slows and then the beautiful sound of the anchor dropping, oh yeah! He announces get to fishing and the adults grab some poles and hit the rails with the kids. The kids wanted to run back and forth and get the bait from the tank. They were so entertained by everything on the boat. So bait was sent down and immediately sounds of fish-on, hook-up sounded through out the boat. Talk about excitement. The kids had a BLAST! Captain Stan was great constantly telling everyone to change bait after a few minutes, the kids watched and learned initially the whole process of how to bait and then drop the lines to the bottom and crank up a few and wait to feel the tug, then we handed them the poles to real in the fish or change bait. Shortly after that many started to cast out themselves and later many learned how to put the bait on themselves. Fishing started off with a fury and then soon I had to leave the rail with a few others so we could hit the galley to help. Left my kid in good hands and off to the Galley.
Russ88, bring it on...he and I helped the Chef Emilio, we had fun.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/mleegal66/LARRC%20W%20TEAM57%20PIERPOINT%20LANDING/CIMG2309.jpg
While we were in the galley we could constantly hear shouts of hook-up as Macs and numerous Sand Bass were brought over the rails. We cooked and prepped alot of Burgers, Chicken sandwiches and Hot Dogs and waited for the hungry kids.....hmmm!...so I yelled out the door that lunch was ready, a few heads turn and immediately they all go back to fishing, haha, no takers, tooo much fun! So we quickly cleaned up the kitchen and as we were doing so we started hearing shout of "Cuda", holy cow!!! Kitchen is clean and Emilio says lets go, we run on out to have some fun.

First up, more quick pixs of the excitement on the boat.
CAPT'N, I think he wants some grub....lol

I then turned around to the shout of Cuda at the back of the boat and I see fishbones with one of the kids, he has to help hold the pole and then he starts to head to the front of the boat with the kid and then half way he has to take over the pole and gets going faster to the front. He and a crew member then battle the beast, handing the pole to each other of and under the anchor line, a crowd gathered and were hopint to see the beast...it starts to surface and then saws off the line, rrrrgh! I believe they said it was indeed a huge cuda.

After fishing for a short time it was back to the Galley for us, Captain announced we would be leaving shortly.
Emilio and I started cooking it up....now the kids were hungry and so were all the adults. We hooked up the crew with chicken sandwiches and double burgers. All the adult volunteers and chaperones got some double burgers also.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/mleegal66/LARRC%20W%20TEAM57%20PIERPOINT%20LANDING/CIMG2324.jpg
Emilio was fast and furious at the grill, he can cook. Later back at the landing he gave us some of his home made smoked Yellow Fin Tuna. It was DELICIOUS, the BOMB, XLNT, wow he can smoke some fish. The he gave me some of his home made Cevice and it was the best I ever had. Good job Emilio, had a blast working along side him, chit-chat was good, fishing was fun, he is definitely a new friend, one very nice guy, and killer Chef.
After we fed the now hungry masses we cleaned up and hit the deck again, let's fish, but first I had to run around and snap some more pixs...

I finally found GeordyBass helping several kids get on some fish....

Chumming the heck out of the waters, definitely helped produce the numbers. Other boats in the area were hardly bringing in fish over the rails they kept looking over at us as we constantly shouted fish-on...... So later I hooked up our chumming buddy with a double burger he asked me to put in the micro. I found him later and he said Thanks, found my burger, glad he got a chance to munch.

fishyboy helping some of the kids out.....I finally had to opportunity to meet him and tease him about being known as the "Chick Magnet" on the boards, he just smiled and laughed a little embarrased, he was a big help and a good kid. The younger kids really took to him.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/mleegal66/LARRC%20W%20TEAM57%20PIERPOINT%20LANDING/CIMG2341.jpg
It was so much fun helping the kids out and seeing the different levels of fishing going on. Some kids stayed with their partner for the day, others got the hang of fishing and moved around by themselves and some just wanted to run around and when they heard "who wants to reel in a fish" would go over and reel it in. I was hoping to get a Cuda on but missed out, the back of the boat was packed and that was where all the action seemed to be. Cuda, a bat ray and many Sand Bass were brought up.

I had a blast myself for the day......Russ88 in the background fly lining some dines I believe. Some of the gang brought their own poles and we had to keep an eye on the kids when they tried to fish with them....haha. One kid was trying to fish with a nice bait caster, lol.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/mleegal66/LARRC%20W%20TEAM57%20PIERPOINT%20LANDING/CIMG2344.jpg

I ran around one more time to take some last shots because they Captain announce we would be leaving shortly......of course who did I find still on the slay. Flyngby and his lil gal.....she caught another sweet bass....

After the fight with the cuda she says my arms are tired.......she had numerous fights the whole day.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/mleegal66/LARRC%20W%20TEAM57%20PIERPOINT%20LANDING/CIMG2348.jpg
Even though she was warn out she always had a huge smile on her face for the camera. She kept asking why does everyone want to keep taking my pix? We laughed and told her "because you keep catching lots of huge fish". She was a cutie, a new lil fishing gal.

Well that is all for now on part II, scroll down for the final pixs of the day on part III.

Filleting time......the crew was surprised at the total fish count, so on the way in Captain Stan let the boat drift and we were able to drift for a lil while so they could prep all the fish for the kids and a lil more fishing was done, yay.....

Gentlemen it was a pleasure to meet those I haven't met and to see those I have met before, it was an Honor to be a part of this group on such a wonderful day.
Many thanks to LARRC and CAPT'N, and a special Thank-you to the crew of SOCal.

Lastly, we rested for a bit, grabbed a lil more munchies and said our fond farewells until we meet again......Thank-You Guys it was a blast!
Like Trolley stated earlier, Dana would have been proud of all of us : )
I personally felt he had a hand in our day of success because out of all the 5 boats ours caught the most fish..... approximately 150 Sand Bass, 60 Cuda landed. I checked the site and the other boats only got half as many. The Captain even stated that the trip out the day before did not produce the numbers. So our half-day morning trip was successful in more ways than one. Happy kids, lots of fish and some very happy volunteers, as you can see by the smiles on all the kids, small and big we had FUN!
I believe only 3 kids felt a lil sick during the day and 1 lil gal was asleep in the galley the whole day, she did get some Ginger Ale and that helped a lil.
Only 1 lil casualty that I saw, a kid got a hook partially in his hand when his buddy next to him was reeling in fish and the hook flew out. Thank goodness Chef Emilio was next to him and he started to yell at the kid to stop reeling in, he was so excited he was reeling away. Finally, on the third yell he looks up and stops reeling and we explained to him what had happened and his buddy was like "your hook was in my hand". Thankfully it was just barely in. Great reaction by Emilio.
The LARRC guys were cool and I have fishing plans with a few of my new buddies. Emilio and a friend of his who was there and also lives in my neck of the woods will all get together and fish soooon! xlnt!

Thanks for hanging in there as I posted all these pixs to remember our fun day out on the water, what a rewarding fishing trip seeing all those smiling faces all day.

Tight lines all.....

I am a little late joining the party, so what else is new.

I want to thank all that volunteered for the 61st Annual Long Beach Kids Trip! That's right, the LARRC as been doing this for 60+ years!

I would also like to apologize for anyone that was supposed to go and got late or no reminder of the date. Tough couple of weeks.........

This was truly a great day on the water with the kids, and as the pictures tell the story, all had a great time.

NG, this was your first club trip, you jumped right in and really helped out.

Fishbones, thank you for helping, just next year try not yo have so much fun, some of the kids were a little jealous.

Russ, again another year and you are there, thank you.
Emilio, and his friends Chad, and Ed were all very helpful. Emilio, not only do you build rods, you run a galley, dislodge hooks, catch fish, and .......

Gordy, thank for the help, we talked a bit of smack eh? But next time stop asking the girls if they have older sisters.

This year we had 5 charted boats, almost 250 kids! The club pays for everything, boats, gear, food, food, and more food, we even had a marine biologist on each boat to talk to the kids about our precious oceans.. We do this by collecting old tackle, and selling it at swap meets, so when you upgrade, change or have extra gear, please keep us in mind.

If you are interested in helping at furture events, or have some gear to donate (we give donated items receipts for IRS) please PM me.

Our boat, The So Cal, was the most successful on getting fish. We went, anchored, and Mr. Grumpy came to play. Steve Fliyngby and I were talking about the phenomenal fishing, we both agree that it was Dana, still doing everything he can to put kids on fish........................

Thank you all,

Scott Schiffman
