Caught this shovel nose this morning off of Seal Beach Pier. He was nearly 12 LBs (11 pouns 14 ounces). I caught him on frozen squid, and at first, by the way he was pulling, I taught he might be a bat ray. This was the only fish I caught this morning but I had so much fun reeling him in that it made the rest of the day worth it. The picture was taken with my cell phone, so it is not the greatest.

That explains why when I catch them I farm them. On the piers I only use 10 mono. But then I'm not much of a pier fisher.

My original setup was 12 lb test with an 8 lb fluorocarbon leader, since I figured this would be a lot of fun. However after getting my line snapped without even having a chance to put up much of a fight, I figured I would bring a second heavier setup to see what was snapping my line. The braided line with its small diameter allows me to use a fairly light rod and reel (rod=Quantum Kayak 10-17 lb; reel=Shimano Sedona 6000FB), which adds to the feel during the fight.
