I got Jared's book and am interested in some of his recommended trips and others.

In the Bishop and Mammoth areas, are permits required if camping overnight? If so, where do you get the permits?

Yes. Permits are required for overnight camping, none needed for dayhikes (except in Whitney zone IIRC). You can get them at the forst service office. I know there is one in Bishop, and one in Mammoth Lakes. Might be one in lone pine.
