Good afternoon,

I am going to try to make this as short as possible, I have been up since yesterday morning, so I am exhausted.

Stayed up all night, trying to decide on where and what to fish today, so finally, literally, at 5:00 a.m., I decided to fish the Matt Walsh out of LA Harbor Sportfishing. I haven’t fished there in years, and decided to give it a try, the report from yesterday morning was decent, so I grabbed my dusty saltwater gear, and was on the road by 5:30 a.m.

Arrived at the landing at 6:05 a.m., and saw a friendly familiar face, my old friend John Batts that used to run the City of Long Beach. Apparently, he is over here now full time. I jumped in line to purchase my ticket, and was told to get out of line by John. “I got this,” he said. THANK YOU JOHN! So I left the office with my gear and waited by the gate for the guys to get the boat ready so that they could load us for our 6:30 a.m. departure.
Crew today was Captain John, and sorry, I forgot the names of the cook and deckhand. John made his morning safety speech, and informed us on the days plan to hunt for barracuda and sand bass down towards H.B. My set-ups today were:
1. 12 lb test, #2 Kumamoto light hook, 4 oz torpedo sinker on a dropper loop.
2. 15 lb test, #2/0 Kumamoto light hook, ¼ oz sliding sinker.
3. 25 lb test, Tady C in mint green.
DECIDED TO LEAVE THE AVETS AT HOME, I MISS FISHING MY NEWELLS!

We made a stop at San Pedro Bait for a nice mix of anchovies and sardines, then we were off to the fishing grounds!

Arrived at the grounds a short time later, made the chum circle, and they dropped the hook. I made a cast, nothing. Made another cast, and my jig was stopped hard! DAMN I missed throwing the iron, I haven’t done it since last season! Kept a steady wind, and fish fought great. Got it to the boat, threw it on, and had the first fish on the boat! A nice 7 lb barracuda! Figured that this was going to be a great bite on the cuda. Well, the bite never really took off.
MY FIRST CUDA SINCE LAST SEASON! FUN!!!!!!! ON THE IRON!

I fished the iron hard, and after awhile, I missed another one. The Sand Bass were VERY slow picking, so I decided to give them a try for nothing. After a little while longer (most times, you have to SIT on spots for awhile before they actually start biting well), the fish never started to bite, so we made a move.
On the third spot, I hooked another cuda, got it to the boat, and was getting ready to throw it on, and it spit the jig at the boat. So after about 300 casts today, I decided that on the next spot, I was going to concentrate on catching a bass, so I grabbed my 12 lb rod, and waited for the next spot.
We dropped the anchor on our final spot, and went to work. Again, no fish hit the deck for awhile, then we started a SLOW pick on them. I ended up catching 3 legals, and 4 shorts. I also missed quite a few, these fish were LAZY! I would actually wait longer than I normally would when I get bit, and let them FULLY load my rod, and swing. Nothing. This was happening to quite a few people.

After awhile, it was time to head home, so we weighed up jackpot, which I was a very close second..grrrrrr….and the deckhand filleted the fish for us on the way home.

Today the conditions weren’t very nice. Fairly large South swell, and south/east wind. The South swell turned to mixed the last part of the morning. Todays lack of fish was due to the not so great conditions today.
The crew on the Matt Walsh was great, I would recommend this boat for your next ½ day trip if you are in the San Pedro area. They are located at Port’s O Call village in San Pedro.
Even though the fishing was slow and conditions weren’t too good, I was very happy to get back out on the ocean, and twice as happy to be throwing the iron again! I had a fun morning, and can’t wait for the fish to bite more consistently, and for the fish to start biting better.

Until next time………….

Hi ghetto dad,

Nice cuda .... on the iron. Went today and you woulda slammed them for sure !! Bass bit the iron too !! No, not me my buddy. I did my usual 1 intentional cuda catch and them I avoided them like the plague to fish exclusively for Bass.

Glad you're getting out and look forward to further reports.
