I went out to Puddingstone on sat. bright and early caught two 3 lbs SMB right off the second dam. I used a KVD spinner bait. I was only there for about an 1/2 hour before my first strike and I would have caught more but I only fished for about 3 hours.

From the pic it appears you may have kept the fish... Do you happen to have another pic? I'm curious if it's really a SM. From the pic it looks like a skinny LMB.

Nice job getting two quick from the Pudd.

cool.. its a LMB. Nice going, lots of guys dedicate days to try to catch 1 out of pudd and you show up and catch 2. LOL.
Pudd is a good lake to practice..it will test your patience. How did the bass taste?

I didn't know they had smallies in the Pudd. Looking at your first picture, the fish seems to have a rather small mouth, Congrats

Yes it sure has a small mouth for a LMB, But I doudt that it is a SMB. If so that would be a first I think ?

Smallies have more of a bronze to brown color to them.

Are the two photos a picture of the same fish? If yes, it's defiantly a LMB and not a smallie.

I think its a lmb i have fished the pudd a long time they did plant smallies at one time many many years ago ive only heard of 1 or 2 ever getting caught the water just gets to warm to hold a good population but nice catch anyway. No eating them gotta save them for the next generation. But really again nice fish.

Yeah I didn't know the difference. I just started bass fishing and someone told me it was a small mouth so I went with that. Only been bass fishing for about a month now so that was my fifth time going

Large Mouth vs Small Mouth ....
the size of the mouth really has no ID validity

its how far the Jaw extends past the eye ..

LMB jaw extends past the eye ... looking at the pic of the fish on FOIL you can see the jaw does indeed past the eye
SMB jaw does not extend past the eye

but what do i know .... check out the site http://gfp.sd.gov/wildlife/critters/fish/docs/fishbook.largemouthbass.pdf

or this pic shows very clearly .. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fish/bass/small_large.html

you said in your first post you were near the second damn where is that at i thought Puddingstone only had one...

Since the dam isn't contiguous, it appears as two separate sections. I got the impression he was referring to the northern part of the dam, which was the original swim area.

Here's a picture of a Largemouth and a Smallmouth, we caught on a recent trip out. As you can see, there's a huge distinction between the two. Color, Eyes, and the Mouth. Hope this helped.

Well right when u pull out of the launch area there is the one to the right then u skip one more cove over and there is another. I am going out there on sunday around 5:30am. I want to try and use the drop shot method.

No question that is a LMB. Several years ago when Morris Dam was drained several fish from there where planted in The Pudd.
That plant contained several species of fish including SMB I caught few myself on jerk baits. At that time several anglers had catches that included SMB but I have not seen or heard of a SMB being caught at the Pudd since that time approximately 13 years ago give or take a year.

My brother and I have caught SMB at the pudd once or twice. This was maybe 2 years ago and both times the fish were maybe 4" in length.

I caught my first LMB a couple weeks back, how did it taste? I figure i'll just wait till I get a bleeder and eat it then. Nice catch btw

This bass is a living oxymoron... A small-mouthed Largemouth Bass.

It is practically impossible to get a a bleeder unless you caught one on a jerkbait that was deeply hooked.
