On the ¾ day trip, Captain Steven decided to head across the channel over to Catalina. Everyone had plenty of time to relax and get their rigs situated on the ride over. We passed the Isthmus, and from a distance, it seemed pretty crowded.

We arrived at the island and soon started fishing. The calicos started to bite pretty well on plastic, but with the water hovering around 62 degrees, the bass were a little less eager to play. We had to reposition and get back on the spot, and after we did, some bigger bonito started to breeze through. There were a couple nice ones caught along with some littler ones, but soon a sea lion came through and scattered them.

We fished a few more spots throughout the day. Bonito were definitely present at every spot and they would bite our baits, but with the sardines, they would run and drop. There were also some nice calicos caught on the fly lined sardine, but these bites were few and far between. As always, there were plenty of blue perch and other bottom grabbers to be had which held constant action for those that wanted to fish them. I even joined in the perch slay, and it was fun as always. My dad got quite a few legal calicos on the plastic grub.

The island held some potential, but the water needs to warm up a few degrees before it really gets going. I’m hoping to have some good calico and bonito fishing over there later in the month.

On the way home and a few miles off Rocky Point, we saw a blue whale. I managed to get a couple pictures before it sounded.

On the twilight trip, we had pretty consistent fishing all night. I broke the ice with a nice calico on a plastic grub tipped with squid, not even feeling the structure. Once I found the structure, I decided to “go big or go home”, so I put on a leadhead with a green mogambo on my Torium 20 with 30# test and a Super Seeker 90M with the whole squid. Pulling a bass out of the rocks on this set up feels really nice, and I pulled a few nice bass out of the rocks on this.

As the sun started to go down, this one guy named Russ was on fire with the bass using a sliding egg sinker and a sardine – a good sign of things to come! Quite a few other guys were also getting them, and most of the fish we were getting weren’t really on the structure like winter time, and the bass were also getting “wormed up” on the meter. We ended up with 47 mixed bass for 8 anglers. I sure hope this good fishing continues. Great times, great fishing!

Hi Jackpot Jimmy,

Nice chance to double-dip on the Bass. Tough for the crew, in a way, with the Cat run during the day and then twilight !! And Sunday another day the boat will probably have enough to get out !!

Thanks for the reply Ron and sorry for the late response! There's actually another crew on twilight different than the 3/4 day...so the 3/4 day crew can have a chance at some rest!

I'm really excited about the local bass picking up ... good sign of things for the rest of the summer, and from here, I'd figure it will only get better! :Big Grin:
