I really dont get up north to fish to often so when I saw Phenix hostin aboard the Maximus this July 4th weekend I jumped at the chance for some hopefully epic Red fishing.... First off the Phenix guys gathered up a great group of guys. All fishkilla's. No bickering and hoggin rails. Phenix also raffled of a few rods and gave out some swag.
The Maximus crew was good. They were very customer friendly and they did whatever the charter master wanted to target. The boat was very nice also. The galley had good seating and the flatscreen tv had movies on day and night to keep us company. Stephanie in the galley was another bonus. She cooked up some really good grub!!! 5 thumbs up for the Maximus!!!
So after 2 hours of fighting through traffic I get to Papa Hooks around 7 and it was already pretty chilly. Great all I packed were shorts... After meeting all the guys from Phenix and the Maximus Crew and deciding on a game plan we headed to Old San Nic... We spent a few hours makin squid but they didnt float so we got to the island around 7 or so. First stop started slow but with a little squid chunking it woke up the fish and I put the first fish of the trip on board with a goat on fresh shrimp.(courtesy of the Phenix Crew)

It was slow pickings though so captain got us in tight to the kelp and it was game on. What followed for the next hour was just sick.... Monster goats started comin over the rail with 3-4 goin all the time. The average sheep was probably 5-8#'s.:EyePop: I got two and farmed alot more on that stop. I was getting bit good on the 3/4 ounce slider with a whole squid or a whole shrimp on 20lb. Some guys were doing well with the lead head also but I think the slider was the money rig. We relocated to the next pocket of kelp and it was game on again. This time it was a mix though. Beast sheephead and mutant whitefish... I was shocked at the size... Average whitefish was like 5 pounds and one guy pulled out a 13.8 lb whitefish. (potential cali record) I ended the day with a limit of goats with two of them studs close to 10#'s. A new pb. Also got a whitefish close to 10 lbs for another pb and a ling, two cabbies and a couple rockfish. Awesome day. Jackpot went to a 20+ goat I believe.
Some of the damage...

Day two we went on the hunt for monster reds and every drift we tried had tonnage of fish. Getting them to bite was a mystery. We could not buy a single rockfish. Capt was metering solid fish on practically every spot and we could only scratch up a few chuckles and tiny rockfish. No reds in sight. Tried all over and no cigar. Decided to head towards home and give it a go closer to home. We started getting a few fish finally and I ended up with a couple. Got a nice florida also!!! Jackpot went to a nice red...
