just got a sufficient fishing pole set up and started fishing off the dana point jetty and off the pier for now until i can afford to go out on a boat. shimano teramar inshore 7'6 rod and a baitrunner 12000d 65lb braid. pretty good. went off the big jetty the first time and struck out. went off the pier in san clemente and struck out . went off the little jetty in dana point again and wham!! about a 18 inch shovel nose! cought him off a big hunk of squid. anyone have any tips/ ideas to try it would be greatly appreciated kinda new to the whole saltwater fishing right now will take all the tips/help i can get right now thanks

1st Tip, Head down to Doheny with your set up and cast out from the surf. Use at least a 4oz torpedo with at least a 1/0 hook. Use no less than 15 lb test and use that squid you have.
Then just cast and wait. There are plenty of fish out there waiting to be caught ( and released ).
Good Luck,

this harbor is known for massive spotfin croakers. Try a nice fat sandcrab.
