Well this past week has been AWESOME! My job at Manzanar took me to camping at Devils Postpile for a week with the boys I supervise. Technically, the job I am doing is leading me to become a Park Ranger at any park or do maintenance for the Forest Service seasonally.

Anyways, Manzanar sent us to Devils Postpile (right by Mammoth) to do some work. We stayed here for the entire week (July 16th-20th) and camped out.

Here is my huge tent-cabin with a bear box next to it:

When we got there on Monday we hiked up to Devils Postpile. Here is a view on the hike:

Our crew built trails by moving BIG rocks and digging up dirt. We also planted trees, cleaned bathrooms, put in fences, etc. Our work days were 9 hrs a day so we would always go swimming in the river at the end of the day. The water is cold but we climbed all over the rapids and of course the boys all were a big handful but LOTS of fun!

The work was very tiring at times and we did a lot of hiking. I seriously think that I have lost weight and gained quite a bit of muscle from this.

Here is a view by the trails we were building:

Anyways, if any of u have never camped here….U NEED TO! What a beauty! It is sooo nice up there. We went into mammoth and went shopping and of course we went fishing. Several days during the week we were going to go and we ended up having big bbqs with the rangers that worked there or else everyone was exhausted.

BUT finally on Wednesday we went fishing. I drove the boys after work to Saotcher Lake which is by Red Meadows.

Here is Kevin setting up his fishing gear:

Me ready to get some fishing on in my work outfit:

Scotty trying to catch a fish:

We started fishing at 5:30pm and went until 8:30pm. I thought it was beautiful here! In the beginning Scotty tried using my fishing pole with a spinner and wasn’t catching anything! Kevin tried dry flies and gulp bait. Andrew didn’t really know how to fish so I attempted to teach him some basics. All the boys are between the ages 15-18 yrs so I really enjoyed fishing and teaching them.

I personally used a kastmaster, a colorful spinner, and then went to bait fishing. All of us were moving all over the lake. I ran over to a good looking part and noticed the fish started jumping around 6:30pm. I got in the water and put my gulp eggs and craws on my line. I started trolling and then caught a 6in rainbow. Shortly after I caught a 12 in rainbow and about an hr later caught my 15 in trout. All the guys were real frustrated with me catching all these fish and they couldn’t get anything. Sooo…I stopped and helped them set up all their rigs. I showed them the drag and started showing them what I do! What fun! I really enjoyed showing them how to fish more then catching my own. By the end of the night I was the only one who had caught fish but was more proud that they were learning.

Me with my first catch:

All the rainbows I caught:

By the end of the night we all huddled around the water, and I taught a few of them how to gut the fish. Kevin with his flashlight and Scott helping me gut was really fun! Everyone was making their usual jokes and being real sarcastic.

By the end of the night I took the trout back and fillet them. We had a nice camp fire and I cooked the trout for the boys with Dixie fry. They loved it! The trout were really good!

The next day we went to Rainbow Falls to do some trail work and there were fly fisherman all over out by the trail fishing.

Here is rainbow falls:

Basically, this place is beautiful! I highly encourage anyone to come and camp out here and fish here. There are some really nice places to camp where our crew helped build some of the sites and worked on them.

Anyways, I am going to Santa Cruz Island next week to do some more forest work. We might try surf/ocean fishing. Sooo…..until next time!

Your accomadations look cool there.

All I ever see is pics of people fishing, swimming, hiking, running away from forest fires, etc, etc.

Looks like you got the routine down to a science.

Have fun and good luck.

Carrie, we love hearing from you and about all the hard work you and the boys are doing out there... of course always punctuated with lots of fishing in between. You are living my childhood dream. I'm old and tired now, so I'll stick to living it through you. Great pictures.

I caught all the fish. The boys were frustrated! Sooo...I gave up fishing halfway thro and started helping them. I REALLY wanted them to catch all the fish and they didn't get anything. So everytime I caught a fish I would get one over to reel it in for me or else to learn how to hold it or take the hook out. Fishing with them is fun!

I bet they do get frustrated, cause you make everything look so easy. They will get the hang of it and then they will be hooked.

My trip to Santa Cruz island was awesome, but I didn't get to fish unfortunately. I posted a little story about the island on the general discussion board if ya guys want to see pics of the trip and stuff. It was a nice place to go!
