Woke up at noon after handling some overseas business all night. I hate working on the other side of the world's time. I was pretty stressed, so I decided to take the day off and do some striper fishing. Benefit of being self employed. I did not know if there was enough time to fish this late in the day. I said the heck with it and gave Castaic Lake a call to make sure it was OK to launch my boat. Lady said I was good to go, so I load up my tin boat, quick breakfast and off I went. After encountering some traffic I got the Upper Lake at 2. Got to my spot at around 2:30ish and started plucking away at the fish. The boat next to me was doing really well on the nicer models. I was releasing the few fish I was catching and got a call from pops to bring some fish for our rental tenants. Gotta keep my tenants happy, that is my mortgage money! so I hightailed it out of the area and took a long boat ride to place I know for sure had some fish. Got me a quick limit and by that time the lake was closing. Here are the stills:

The Lake Lice was in force today. Hate to see this place on the weekend.

Plucked off a few of these to start.

Got to the new area and instant bendo.

There were some decent size fish here.

Wait was 10 minutes between each bite. Not wide open by any means, but a good pick.

Parting shot. There used to be 5.

Hope you enjoyed the day at Castaic with me. Caught less than 15 fish this week, but with the short amount of time, that is still some pretty good striped bass fishing. See you next week.

haha i think those are the baby ducks next to me on the dam on tuesday. im fishing the dam and all of the sudden these little dudes just show up right next to me like ninjas. took some quick pics on my phone and let them go on their way. is it evil to see these cute little ducks to jump off the dam into the water and kinda wanting some 20 pound striper to just boil on one of the babies???? kinda felt like a guilty pleasure.....

You did it again Marz.
Took my kids to the Dam on wed afternoon, did not get any bite between 3 of us....I used fresh sardine from the salt trip the day before. It was really slow from shore.

KPN.

I been using the aged sardines. Everytime I head out on a solo fishing trip, I take notes on my phone and bring various aged baits. It is my own science experiment. Seems like summer months they prefer aged better than the fresh. I am assuming the summer water/alge clarity and tempature is playing quite a role on how they feed, so scent is being a big factor. I have been using last year complied data and using it to my advantage this year. My catch has increase by about 35% this year, so the science experiment is doing some good for me.

This week, my test was spot on. As you can see from the pictures only one rod got fish the whole time. That was the experimental aged bait rod. Second rod with the fresh bait got bit only once. The cure time for the summer bait is working out great. However, some days, the data and fish dont agree at all. Hopefully one day, I will have more time and post a website on how I set up my experiments, datas, formulas, and results. I just wish I had more days to fish so I can play with the experiment more, but this thing called work is screwing it up for me. So get some older baits next time your out there Kahn!

I also been playing science experiment with the vermillion rockfish and their homes for a couple of years. Took me a couple of years of experimenting, but now I finally head out on my boat and specifically target them with very little by-catches of other rockfish. Hopefully my results with the vermillions will be as good for the striped bass in the coming years. Also, Let me know how you did on those gps numbers I gave to you.

Hey Marzocchi, I've noticed this as well with the aged baits. When I fish with my brother, he likes to use the fresh bait. I don't care most of the time, so I'll bring a week to two weeks old bait. On somedays, only his poles get bit, and he'll say see, gotta use fresh bait. Then there are days where only my pole gets bit. Some days, they aren't picky and will bite anything. I should be more diligent and record all of this, but I'm too lazy. I envy your commitment to learning from your experiences.

I think it's on.

What I saw yesterday convinced me to give it a try but company showed up and I sat and talked instead.

Thanks for the in depth research about fresh bait & older bait. I always think fresh bait is better like any other kind of bait....may be wrong.
I make lures, so I always test top water lure & diver lures against the boils, and I found out top water always works better during boil than sinking one .
Thanks for the tips. I'll give that a try on my next time out.

Khanh.
