Well Dan (GotBass?) gives me a call and he is hungry to get back up to SB for some more long pole action. Of course I'm very much down for some more long pole action myself.

Dan grabs the bait (3 pounds of fresh sardines) and we meet up at 4:45am and head up the coast. Get to our destination around 6am. On the way to the first location we see two 3 foot shovel nose beaching themselves and dining on the massive amount of sand crabs. *good sign* So we stop right where we saw the sand sharks and start the day off. Long poles are soaking bait. We start going for perch...... ........ ...... damn no perch round here right now. But after about 10 minutes the long pole action begins!!!!!!

Dan's pole goes off first with a guitar fish:

Then Dan tags another Guitar fish:

Then it was my turn for a guitar fish:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0004.jpg

Then Dan goes for another one!!!! (he was hot sticking it on this spot):

Then back to me with a small smoothhound:

Then here goes Dan with another BENDO!! on a shovel nose:

Then i go off on a quick double twin shovel nose:

#2

Then Dan goes 3 fish streak on a shovel nose, a small Leo, and a guitar fish:

Guitar fish:

Then me moved further south from the first spot knowing this was a Leo hot spot recently

And while we were there i get hammered hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My bait runner just starts peeling crazy!!!!!!!!!!!! I run to my pole and engage the reel and BENDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0018.jpg

This fish is running hard right out to sea, i start chasing it down the surf. Fight was hard i even had to have Dan light me up a smoke lol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0019.jpg

I started to get worried half way into the fight because my reel was running low on line YIKES:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0020.jpg

After a good 10 to 15 minute fight we saw some color and both screamed out "HUGE LEO!!!!!! HOLY SH*T!!!!"

Landed it and i was jumping up and down with excitement, had two guy stop by and were shocked that such a big shark was in the surf lol. Ended up being a Huge Leo right around 5 feet long. What a fight:

Let her go back to the ocean. Was pretty cool watching that big fish swim back to fight another day.

Then Dan hooks into another Leo:

Then my turn on a shovel nose:

Then Dan on a Guitar fish:

Then another shovel nose (pic came out blurry tho):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0031.jpg

Then with what little time we had to perch with all this long pole action i actually got myself a mini piggy on a monster sand crab:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0032.jpg

Then Dan hooked into a shovel nose:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0033.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0034.jpg

Then while i was fishing monster sand crabs for piggy perch i get SLAMMED on my 6# perch pole. Drag starts screaming then nothing!! I pull back a broken hook broke right in half!!!!!!!!! I toss out another monster crab and get slammed again!!! BENDO!!!!!!!!!!!!! drag starts screaming of my reel. Nice long 7 minute fight and i pull in a shovel nose:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0035.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/RayLopez/Fishing%20Photos/Rays_Pictures_0037.jpg

That was a first for me. Man those shovel nose fight hard on light gear lol.

After this we left for some lunch and more bait. All this before noon!!!!!

We finish up lunch get our bait and head to another beach near the bait shop. Get down there and Stat fishing around 1:30.

Dan was talking about how he wanted to hook into some bat rays again. Well guess what?

Overall another awesome day on the surf in SB.

Perch numbers were low they were not biting as well as before but they were overall bigger (i was also using much bigger sand crabs)

But loads of Guitar, Shovel nose, and Leo's.

All fish were caught on:
Fresh and frozen sardine half's, squid, sand crabs and the gulp crack worms.

I was happy to finally get some pics since the last two trips i didn't get to. Enjoy!

I believe that is a Thornback. If it was a Round Ray you would have a stinger in your hand in that pic.
Your day and week would be ruined. The Round Ray or Banjo has the stinger at the end of the tail between 2 skin flaps unlike the Bat Ray where the stinger is near the body.

It does have a rounded head and is not a thornback ray and I did NOT get stung in the hand in this picture or any others. These are known as thornback guitarfish. Different from the small stingrays youre thinking of.
