:???: I want to try surf fishing some where on or near santa monica beach/pier but not sure where to go. Are there designated fishing areas or is the entire beach pretty much open to fishing? If so, should I try north of the pier or south? I don't know the area around the beach so I'm using the pier as the reference point. Thank you in advance.

Try to avoid areas with lots of swimmers. Get some Berkley Gulp Camo Sandworms.
Cut into 2" pieces, #8 hook, 4 lb leader, 1/2 oz egg weight. Trout/Bass pole.
Also known as Perch 'Crack'. Don't need to cast too far either about 30' to 50' out.

Location depends on specific conds. in specific areas i.e. north or south.
Right now, if you want to focus on SAMO, a good idea would be to go and
do a re-con of the areas on a low tide time . Find "Holes" "Troughs" "Sandbars ' Structures,
that the high waves and currents dug out . Landmark by memory of shore structures,
buildings, houses, trash cans, etc. Later, in time you will learn to "Read" the water on med. and high tides,
but this takes time to accuire this skill effectively, because conds. change from day to day.
