On Saturday, twenty anglers can aboard for whatever the day had in store for us. The Tradition got out on Thursday, and found some good calico bass fishing, as well as a bonus 38 pound white seabass for a lucky angler fishing 30 pound test line. We were hoping for more of the same in regards to calico fishing, in the least. We first proceeded to head on out to get an anchovy/sardine mix from the bait receiver. We’ve had anchovies for the last week or so, and that’s been really a great help to round up the bass along the kelp. We then headed out of King Harbor and headed south. Captain Steven Konrady made his safety speech and told us his game plan for the day.

We soon arrived at our first spot, and the calicos started to come alive. There were also those pesky mackerel present that plagued us last weekend, but if you got your bait close to the kelp, you were rewarded with a calico bass. Ray Mesina was throwing a dark colored zoom into the pockets of kelp, and was rewarded with a nice bass almost every cast. We did see some seabass as well. Jerry Chatfield caught and released a 27 incher – talk about a heartbreak!

After a while, conditions turned for the worse, and every spot we fished in the area was pretty slow. Steven then made a run up past Redondo in search of some better conditions. We tried one spot, where we got some bass on plastics while circling on the spot, but few were caught once we were anchored. We soon moved to another spot, and it was game on. Some barracuda started to swim through, and those who were fishing a surface iron got quite a few. Capt. Steven’s son, Little Steven got 8 barracuda on a mint Tady C. The hot color was definitely mint for the afternoon. In addition, those fishing the bottom were rewarded with some nice sand bass. We stayed late and finished up on the barracuda, getting about 70 of them. Jackpot went to Ray Mesina with a nice barracuda!

On the twilight trip, Captain John Petrov took us back to the same area, dropped the hook, and we started to slay. Every bait was an instant bite, and those fishing the jig got some also, with quite a few biters right at the boat. We got about 50 barracuda for 8 anglers when the bite petered out as the sun went down. Pretty good fishing for twilight!

On Sunday, we got out with a light load and headed up to the area where we got the barracuda. There were no barracuda to begin with, so we fished bass in the morning and had pretty good results. We even had a 30 pound class white seabass follow a calico to the surface. In addition, we released three black seabass that were about 10 to 20 pounds. In the afternoon, we went back to try for the barracuda, and we had a slow pick, but the sea lion made things difficult. It was a good day of fishing nonetheless. Anchovies definitely made a difference with the bass. Most of the sand bass had the yellow under their eyes, which is a good sign of things to come. Hopefully fishing gets better and better as the summer goes on…
