View Full Version : how do i know if i nned my carburator rebuilt?

i have a 1966 mercury 650 / 65 hsp. it runs fine at first for the first couple of hour's but than its hard get started and once it does start it sounds and feels like its flooded, it will take about 3 min. to reach full speed and then when i go the no wake zone if i try to go slow it end's up dying, i heard i need to rebuild the carburator is this true?

Your best bet is probably to take it to a local outboard repair shop,explain to them any problems or concerns, and have them evaluate the engine from top to bottom. Once they have checked it out they can suggest any needed repairs. As for what you are describing, it sounds like the carb or carbs could stand to be rebuilt. But before all that, check how lean or rich your engine is running and play with the adjustment screw to see if that fixes the problem. 187
