fished crystal cove about an hour after high tide 3pm. found a spot with some submerged tide pools and threw my bait out.

never fished here before and didnt know how i should fish it. but i was able to pick up a 3 calicos and some kind of perch. the damn tidepools/rocks/seaweed were a pain i kept getting hung up and so did my gf. we lost a few fish too beause they would run under rocks or wrap us around the seaweed.

the last two calicos did that and i thought i was stuck. so i just left the rod in the rod holder and they would swim out from cover and id reel as fast as i could to get them the hell out haha. my gf caught one that would just keep doing that and eventually broke off.

after getting hung up so many times we decided to move down the beach a bit to something clearer with less debris. first cast out within 10 minutes we hooked into a nice shovel nose. it started to get late 630 and cloudy so we called it a day.

i de-barbed the hook for easy C&R so they can grow big for me one day. :P

3 calicos
1 perch
1 shovel nose

Nice fish. I think that perch is a pile perch.

thanks guys. do any of you have any suggestions as to avoid getting hung up in the rocks? i was thinking about using a torpedo weight the way i fish for sandbass and calicos on a charter.

Last time I was there a spear diver brought in a 20 - 25# Hali!!! I gave him the ice from my ice chest as my wife and I had just finished our picnic. Maybe next time you'll get on too !!!

I thought that Crystal cove is a Marine preserve. Ive been going there for years to surf and swim and explor the tidepools. Never knew that you could fish. Congrats on the fish.

Same thoughts here. This is Crystal Cove near La Jolla, correct?

I think this is the crystal cove between Laguna and Newport Beach.

My bad your right. It's Crystal Cove State Park so fishing would be ok I presume :?

their website says you can fish. theres lots of people that fish there actually and the lifeguards were watching me reel in a shovelnose. yeah its between laguna and newport. 8)

the preserve stuff youre talking about refers to only shellfish etc that are found in the tidepools. but i see a lot of people take them anyways....
