My first white sea bass local water

After a month of targeting White Sea bass at Cat Island, I finally caught my first WSB. 6/19/2010 got up 3:00am got to the launch ramp around 3:30am. MY boat decided to be on a rag and did fire. After 7:00am go the boat to start and shot out. Pick up squid at San Pedro bait barge. Plan was to head to Catalina Island for the WSB but due to delay. We shot out to San Pedro and work the peninsula. Read report on WSB being caught around the area but no idea where. until I saw a bunch of boat fishing close to each other Including charter boat. Figure I didn’t want to get in everyone way. So I decided to just hang out about a mile away from the group. Posted about 30-35 feet of water along the kelp (temp was 65 degree). My buddy first cast on his 12 lb. bass pole. Got his line pealing and took him to the kelp and broke off. Then my 15 lb. bass pole went off and ran out to the open water. I buckle down the drag but didn’t help line give and there an unhappy Asian guy:Sad:. Seeing what happen I switch to my 30lb outfit and start fishing with that. The calico and sand bass fishing was unbelievable due to the squid chum being put out. After working on the Calico bass my buddy pole got slam. Game on again, got all the pole up and got the gaff ready only for his line to snap again. Got back to fishing hook up on my 30lb outfit fish on again but no idea what it was so we didn’t clear the line. After 10-15min we got color WSB:EyePop:. Excitement on the boat no one have any idea what to do. Everyone ran around like a chicken with their head cut off. Line was in the way pole hitting my face. When I finally got the fish to the top and close to the boat the first gaff miss but second gaff score. Landed my first WSB and party started hahaha. First WSB and got my stone. There was one other boat next to us that were getting the same amount of action but were unable to bring any WSB up.

I was targeting Calico and Sand bass... never knew this will happen, but I love it hahaha. The clothes have been put to reset.

Gone out the following day 6/20/2010 hit up the same spot. Fish for 5 to 6 hr, Had 5 good hit but wern't able to bring the fish to the boat. Three hit was on single live squid on a jig head casting toward the kelp. Two was live 10 inch mac five crank off the bottom.

congrats again, i have been saving my stone to eventually make a necklace out of them, gonna need a few more seabasses to complete it. Your idea of putting them in the case with the pic is great.

You should see the deck of my boat it was cover in blood. I think i rip the gill causing it to bleed that much. Tell you what... I really don't mind the cleanning. It's worth the extra work.

The heart didn't tast good.... grill the stake right when I got home. WSB is one of the best fish I've ever tasted fresh.

I sure the WSB are still out there... planning on getting bloody this weeken too. Last week i went both sat and sun. After hooking up the WSB Sat. I went back and tried my luck Sunday. Fish for 6 hr, the bite was as good as SAT. Monster hit just didn't fully master bring the big fish up.
