With the wife away visiting in the midwest I decided to give myself a fathers day gift! Fishing...
I got an invite from a buddy of mine to fish on his boat for some local rockfish and sharkin. Sweet. So we meet up and head out to Newport Dunes to launch and we're off. We get to the Newport Bait Barge and notice theres like 15 skiffs fishing all around the damn barge. Had to slowly manuever to get by all of them because none of them wanted to move out of the way.

Anyways, we get a very generous scoop of mostly sardine with a sprinkle of anchovies and take off. My buddy is a crazy man so it took us like 20 minutes and 10 miles later to get to our first spot. A secret deepwater rock in about 250ft of water! I started off with a dropper loop and sardine combo and send it down. The poor sardine gets hammered after 5 seconds on the rock and I end up with this pig. It measured 26 inches and was 7.5 on the digi scale. NEW PB FOR ME!!!

We made short work on the boccs and got our limit in under an hour. We started looking at alot of other structure but found mainly salmon grouper with a few starry's and no Reds.

Finally decide its time to go chase down a mako. We head out to the 14 mile bank and start workin the chum. I added a chopped sardine mix into the chum line aswell and send out a nice chunk of mackerel on a 6/0 hook. Not 10 minutes goes by and my clicker goes off........ I grab it and set the hook very hard expecting a very hard first intial run. Nope? Instead it just felt like dead weight. I thought I had gotten snagged in over 500 feet of water on a flylined piece of mackerel? I pump super hard and finally the snag realizes its hooked and the fight is on. He never really made any backburning runs but stayed out of sight no matter how much i tugged on him. Took about 30 minutes and I finally see color. Holy shoot!!! Its a freakin beast!!!

We estimated it over 250 pounds and 7-8ft.(It doesnt matter what you think!) Only problem was that it was a Blue shark and not the mako we were looking for so we released it. Doh! Fun never the less and a second PB for me for the day!!! We try for another 3 hours and finally spot a fin stickin out of the water and slowly sneak up on it and try to bait it but it wanted nothing to do with our baits...

Freakin mola... He chilled right next to our boat for about an hour and we decide it quits and head back in for a quick stop for some sandies by the harbor entrance. Bad Idea. We ended the day with our good friend. Vessel Assist....
