Understanding Implant Grade Surgical Steel
For many years I have discussed and debated some of the common misconceptions our industry faces when it comes to the steel used in body jewelry. I hope to help shed some light on this subject, and share some of the research I have done. I am by no means a chemist, but the first time I reviewed a mill certification sheet, I wanted to know more about what was in the jewelry we were putting into our clients. Understanding the materials we use in our shops everyday allows us to better serve both our clients and our industry.
Currently the APP (Association of Professional Piercers) website states the following regarding acceptable steel types:
“Surgical Steel is made of a variety of alloys. Many of them are used for body jewelry, but only a few specific grades are proven biocompatible: steel that is ASTM F-138 compliant or ISO 5832-1 compliant; ISO 10993-(6, 10, or 11) compliant; or (EEC [European]

Yes, to each their own.

Came across these gems of "art" that scream out "unemployable". Seems to me though that if you make the argument pro-tattoo, you cannot be con-body modification.

How about a Fish hook Implant ?

Would you go with a circle or J hook ?

With implants, the skin is prepared with a germicidal skin preparation before an opening is made. The skin is cut with a scalpel and the layers of skin near the opening are separated to accommodate the implant. The implant is inserted under the skin and the opening is held closed to heal. Implants must also be made of an approved material. The artist is required to provide you with verbal and written instructions on caring for your new body piercing.

Piercings and tattoos are all the rage these days among teenagers.

But unlike their predecessors, these fads don't fade with time. They also come with risks.

Tattoos and body piercings have risks teens may not even know about.

Recent statistics show that about 25 percent of people between the ages of ages 13 to 25 have at least one tattoo.

These so-called "cool" body modifications have many health risks involved. The inks used by the studios are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, so they may not be approved to be injected underneath the skin. The person may have an allergic reaction to the ink, causing the site to swell and itch.

Hepatitis B and C, HIV, and tuberculosis are blood-borne illness that can come from tattoo needles, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Tattooing can cause scars known as keliods. They can also produce bumps along the skin above the tattoo called granulomas, especially if the tattoo contains red ink.

In addition to all the above risks, tattoos can also cause MRI complications. The tattoo pigments may interfere with the quality of the image. Complications are rare, but they still may be able to cause a risk, according to Mayo Clinic.

Once a tattoo is done there is not much a person can do to get rid of it. There are laser treatments for tattoo removal, but they can be painful and expensive and are not completely efficient.

As for piercings, they can be done almost anywhere on the human body from the most common being the earlobes to the unusual location of the webbing between the fingers.

The most popular pierced body parts today are the ears, nose and navel.

Healing time can range from four weeks to one year. It all depends on the upkeep on the piercing along with the jewelry itself. The jewelry can cause an allergic reaction; the best jewelry to wear with a fresh piercing is either titanium or stainless steel.

These metals are used as implant metals so they are not normally recognized as foreign objects to the body.

If the body identifies the jewelry as a foreign object, it will normally reject it. In some cases it can possibly cause the piercing to become infected, or in more severe instances it might explode or burst open.

An 18-year-old Belle Vernon Area High School senior gave an account of her bad experience with a navel piercing, but would only share her horror story anonymously.

She had had her belly button pierced for a few years when she decided to change the jewelry.

The cheap jewelry caused the piercing to become infected. After removing the jewelry the infection would still not get better, despite cleaning it every day.

The girl said the infection continued to get worse until it eventually burst.

The infection cleared up, but it left behind two red fingernail sized scars on either side of her belly button.

The skin and navel both healed, but the scars will be a permanent reminder of the infection caused by cheap jewelry.

While fads come and go, tattoos and piercings will stay with a person for a lifetime.
