I was due for a day off - big time. Heard the perch bite was going off last week but I also heard that the cold front that came through last weekend threw it off a bit. I really needed to get out of the canyon for a bit so myself, Tim & Lori (aka Fish Story Lori) Carnahan and my marina manager Brett decided to head over to Crowley anyways. I LOVE perch fishing and neither Tim or Lori had ever fished on Crowley and neither had caught a perch before - so we were all stoked. A lake wind advisory was in effect but that didn't seem to matter at all until it was about time to return the boat.
We hopped on a pontoon at 7am and found warm glassy conditions - stoked!
First spot we hit was pelican point - didn't see or catch a fish there so we moved on to Leighton Springs - my go-to spot to get the skunk off. We fished that area for a few hours and put 20 fish in the buckets. Pumpkinseed 2" berkley grubs with a white 1/32oz leadhead was the ticket. I couldn't buy a hit using a 1/16oz jighead and both the motor oil and christmas lights colors weren't working well at all - it was odd because those are usually awesome colors there.
After a while we decided to mix it up so we fished Green Banks for nothing. Sandy Point for one big 2lb perch and a few missed fish. Then we hit Crooked Creek which was supposed to be wide open but we didn't find it to be so - although we did put a few more in the boat including the biggest of the day.
The last spot we fished was Beaver cove and it was WFO when we could keep the boat in position.
We ended up keeping two buckets full of the tasty critters - ended up being 42 fish - plus a bunch of small ones we released. I'm not sure why others out there weren't doing as well but we found the bite to be hot.
GORGEOUS day out there, great company and we finished the night off with a massive perch taco fry for my staff. It was a freaking awesome day from beginning to end....one of the best fishing days I've had in months!!
